Like the sound of that Z. I have a friend (who I made friends with in the queue at the Proms) and he lives in Spain in the winter. Then he drives back to England and spends the summer in London so that he can go to the proms every day. What a lovely way to live. Now if I won the lottery that is how I would like to live.
KC - I have also realised lately that planning and booking the holiday and then the anticipation of it makes for a happier time and having something to look forward to and work towards makes each day worth getting up for.

  • I went on holiday by myself lots of times before I met MrEH - only in the UK, but it was up to Edinburgh for the festival and as that was where I really *wanted* to go that was fine! I went up there for anything from a week to a fortnight, going to see shows, and just generally hanging out watching the street entertainers too who were a fab bunch. Got to know various people over the years, plus have good friends up there who I always saw a fair bit of too, so it wasn't like I was spending a fortnight talking only to bus drivers and the woman who served me at the till in M&S, but it was SO liberating to be able to do exactly what I wanted, when I wanted. Loved it! I also think it has served me very well since that I am extremely comfortable in my own company, I don't feel a need to have people around me all the time.

but if this is cos I'm fragile, and need bolstering, then screwing myself up to get on a plane will *not* be useful.

Totally understand that feeling KC, in fact the last time I went away I only plucked up the courage to get on a plane because I *knew* I would be so chilled at the end of the holiday. If you get round to reading any of my blog, somewhere on there is a link to some pictures of a place you *may* recognise.

Spain in winter is fantastic, would recommend it to anyone.

I want to get around to reading your blog, I need the linky. Actually, you might have posted it on your thread by now. Off to looksee.

cherisong - yes, the anticipation! I lost it somewhere, even before I stopped travelling. But, ooh, planning and poring over guide books to Toronto and Chicago and Athens and Istanbul and Cappadocia (tho I never got there - it was under ten feet of snow, oops).

I think my best was the two months I spent trolling around Greece and Turkey - sometimes alone, sometimes with people I met, different people at different times, that was great. The two weeks in Canada, mind you, was brilliant too. Right now, I'd settle for 3 or 4 days in ... I dunno .... Dublin? I could meet Shaunie! .... and turfy maybe .... Bordeaux! I'd like to see Bordeaux. And a nephew of mine is probably marrying a girl from there. Ooh Poland, I could go to Poland, there's *definitely* a family wedding there, next April!

**KC heads off to find rail routes to Poland**

PS - gill, what part of Spain?

Most of Spain is better than here! But up by Granada is fantastic. Have also been to Jaen, which is nice and somewhere my mum lived but can't remember the name of at the moment.
Wouldn't necessary recommend the coast as its full of pensioners!

If you've got the time, you can Eurostar to just about anywhere and then get local transport, which in most places is OK.

I wanted to do the Trans Siberian railway, would love to experience that.

One of my most favourite things is travel, talk about it, plan it, research it, do it. I wanted a career in the travel industry. Took all of my exams towards it. Never happened............ careers service said I was too young for the job I wanted........... sent me to work in a greengrocers and then life happened :(

I have reserched Prague earlier this year. I am hoping to go there before next year. It had originally started as an idea for this years birthday. I have the trains all worked out, a lovely hotel and things to do when there.

Went to Chicago a few years ago for a long weekend. Went to the Ravinia Festival which was amazing. Problem was the NEW guidebook I bought was out of date and I tried going to a jazz club that turned out to be a chinese restaurant and when I went searching for the oldest department store with lovely facades it was all boarded up! Still loved it though

Yep, after Cortijo Romero I stayed in Granada itself a couple of times.

Oh of course! Should have remembered that  feels like thats soon to be me, tbh :(

True, on both counts. I don't need to travel much when I'm there, wherever there is - at the moment, just drinking in the local sights would be lovely.

I might call on your knowledge then, some time next year!

Oh dear! I confess, when I was in Chicago, I stayed near the 3 hotels that were holding the world science fiction convention - I only saw the river on the way home to the airport :o:o:o

Thanks :) I'm off soon to the herbalist. Still got to get my documentation together for the GP.

Sorry you're still bad, Pippi - maybe you're fighting off what I've got?

  • Morning, ahh all this talk of travel is making me restless! I really enjoyed Eurostar (although I went to Lille in November which was very cold!) Barcelona in November on the other hand - I was wearing short sleeves and paddling in the sea :D And rail routes to Poland - I went from Basel overnight to Prague and then an evening train to Krakow (this was after flying to Rome and getting trains down to Sorrento, then up to Milan, and from there to Basel!).. sigh!

    What's the plans for today?

Thanks for checking in! See you later
