Good luck with the continued unpacking - you will soon be straight, I am sure!

We've still got a *few* boxes hanging about but not too many. I gave myself a deadline and listed the boxes on Freecycle, then I HAD to unpack :o

I think so long as you are doing a bit at a time, then the job will get done. You sound very clear about what you want achieve!

Hope you have a good Sunday :)

Thats a good idea! Mine was a good idea at the time:o I wanted to leave the living room like a storeroom because clients who temporarily have to walk through it to use the loo don't see it as it will become when its in use - protecting my privacy, see :D but now the time is drawing close when I'll be turning it into useable space, I have to get going!

Thanks macgirl - its hard to break old habits. I remember my "not scrabbling any more" post - I've just found some very old beermats - two have dates on them from the 1970s, one has pub addresses on - so I thought, lets check on ebay - hundreds of unsold completed auctions, for 99p and less.... I must not list them!!! Oh dear. Keeping 7. Chucking 2. Thats not good :rotfl:

EDIT - I've done it again, for a toy sewing machine - it *weighs* almost as much as a child  its a Singer - and they do seem to sell, nearly every single one of the completed auctions has sold, so I'll keep it to sell on there on the next free listing day. I felt I *should* love it as a child, because it was obviously such high quality, but I never touched it after the first time, I could never find the bobbin so the stitches never stayed, and at 7, I couldn't work it out on my own :( I *cannot* have it around any longer

if you unpack one box a day ...you'll soon get there. It's just daunting when it's a lot to do.You do keep some unusual stuff though.

Could you not list thing like that on Freecycle or give to a charity shop? (If that's not too painful :o)

There are certain things I was keeping that had no value in terms of Ebay, but I couldn't throw them away. I knew that if it had value to me, them someone else might feel the same.....

It is hard. But when I'd packed up most of our house before we moved, I realised that hanging onto stuff was wearing me down and I actually felt freer with less. (Having said that, the decluttering ground to a halt when we moved in :D)

Wise words from Macgirl about letting go of stuff that keeps you in limbo.

I used to be a 'sentimental hoarder' but I prefer to 'travel light' these days & the memories havent changed since letting go of the actual items :).

I just keep thinking about how little space I'll have when living afloat or on the road - that's enough to scare me into decluttering.

Charity bags that appear on the doormat are now my best friends - I dont even have to take the unwanted goods to the charity shop, thereby saving me money :D

    Thanks for that, Taxi.

I've given loads and loads to charity shops over the last six months, and quite a lot more onto freecycle - these things don't seem appropriate to those spaces, somehow....

There are certain things I was keeping that had no value in terms of Ebay, but I couldn't throw them away. I knew that if it had value to me, them someone else might feel the same.....

I think I've done a fair bit of that .... but when I started to declutter in the old place, I was really shocked at what I'd kept. Not just from the past - but from craft projects I had that never got off the ground, or my idea of living a self sufficientish life and stuff I'd want then .... having got rid of so much, I do feel so much freer I'm kind of shocked :rotfl:but the reality of living in a smaller house, with much less storage space, is hitting me once again, now that I think of unpacking the remaining dozen or so boxes. Its just the emotional work - I know it needs to be done, I'm just taking my own sweet time doing it :o:o:o In the old house, I kept imagining my sister having to go through my things after I'd died, like we went through my brother in law's things last year. It was a very helpful image.

Thinking about this - you know, I may not want to do *quite* that, but I certainly want to be more mobile - and that means that everything has to be easy to look after. So there needs to be less of this **stuff**.

There's a stack of books by the front door right now waiting for the next one :rotfl: and my old vacuum cleaner, the one that cuts out all the time, waiting to go to the recycling tip.
