I think the confusion lies in the part of the highway code that suggests you speed up to match motorway traffic, but also give way to traffic already on the motorway... luckily most motorists are able to exercise common sense and move over into the middle lane.

I've found myself in the unfortunate position a few times of trying to enter the motorway from a slip-road, there being unsufficent gap for me to slot in amongst traffic already on the motorway, traffic behind me speeding up to motorway speeds and me fast running out of slip-road ahead!

i can honestly say ive never ran out of slip road, i drive a lot and use our motorways all over the country all day every day and i can always adjust my speed to fit into a gap in the traffic, even at the busiest of junctions.

if you find yourself running out of slip then maybe you should have been preparing for the motoway a bit earlier than you did. and if the traffic coming behind you down the slip is fast approaching then where are they going? right into the back of you or do they manage to merge in with the motorway traffic?

you dont need to get in front of the car next to you, you can get in behind it aswell you know.

personally if the lane to my right is clear and i see someone wanting onto the motorway i usually give them a flash and move to the right, even if my right hand lane isnt clear and there is enough space i will sometimes help the person by adjusting my speed, i will never brake, this could cause chaos behind me i would either accelerate or come off the accelerator alltogether for a short period.
if i see you trying to race right to the end of the slip just to get in front of me dont expect any help, infact expect the very opposite.

In which case the safest, (not neccesarily the correct way forward would be to continue along the hard shoulder untill there is a safe gap to filter into. IT IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • I have found motorcyclists to be the best and most considerate road users in
the U.K. Though they do go a bit too fast at times.

British truck drivers are the next best. :A

The worst overall in my experience are drivers of those big delivery vans
    like Mercedes Sprinters.

    Frank.

Disagree, I'm not keen on them (and they drive badly) but at least it looks different from the usual run of the mill boring bland stuff pumped out these days bu most of the manufacturers.

Better not mentiona any or jeannie will give me another lashing!

What's the bland boring stuff you have in mind? Hopefully not me you rascal .. ;) And you love the lashings anyway - not to mention the fluffy pink handcuffs........ :D

The Mums on school run seem to be the 'worst' on here so far. I'm wondering if listening to Janet and John stories read out by Terry Wogan on Radio 1 and listened to by drivers who are laughing so much and nearly crash their cars qualify??????????

Forget the slip roads for a minute, but aren't commercial vans limited to 60 rather than 70 on A roads and motorways? I heard that recently and wondered if it was true or not. I'm talking about say, Transit size vans.

By the way, some stupid cow in a mercedes sat up my backside for most of my commute home tonight, so annoying.
