How do i get rid of msn messenger?

Hi Tanglefoot. Following the instructions, I get as far as Accesssories but I don't have "Paint" in the Accessories list; I have looked very carefully but it's not there.
To be honest I'm too tired what with trying twice to get rid of Messenger earlier on today I think I'll give it a rest for now and come back to it when feeling more like it. I do wonder though why "Paint" isn't in the list
Thanks for your help and if you're around when I next have a go I may even be able to send you an image of what's on the screen.fitzroy0 -
It may have been removed; go to Start→Run, type mspaint and press OK. If nothing happens or you get an error message, go back to Add/Remove Windows Components and look under Accessories and Utilities→Accessories.I do wonder though why "Paint" isn't in the list
Alternatively, get yourself a different image editing application such as Paint.NET.0 -
Click on start-run, type in msconfig click "OK", then click the "startup" tab, unclick "Msnmsgr" click ok, Done---- you can actually unclick any crud you dont want on startup0

You can also disable messenger completely using Group Policy Editor which is built into Windows. It's a slightly more official way of doing it - I'm always a little concerned about uninistalling windows components using third party tools.
Windows messenger does also have a nasty habit of running itself when you start outlook (express) so disabling at startup only is not always the best option.
Click Start -> Run and then type gpedit.msc in the box that appears and click OK
In the pane on the left, Under User Configuration* expand "Administrative Templates" by clicking on the little + sign. Then Expand "Windows Components" in the same way.
Click on "Windows Messenger" and then you will have a couple of options in the right hand window. Double click on "Do Not Allow Windows Messenger to be run", select "Enable" and then click OK.
*Alternatively you can follow the same procedure under Computer Configuration which should disable windows messenger for all users instead of just the account you are using.
These instructions are for Windows XP, but they should work with other versions too.

I know there's supposed to be no such thing as a stupid question on MSE but if I follow your instructions will it affect my hotmail a/c? During my various attempts yesterday I lost it for a time - may just be a coincidence but...fitzroy0

roddydogs, I tried this and got as far as unclicking "Msnmsgr", clicked ok then the following message appeared
"Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes"
The suggestion in another post to type "gpedit.msc" in start, run - I get a message saying "gpedit.msc" not found.:mad:fitzroy0 -
Do other people use the computer, and do you log in with a password?roddydogs, I tried this and got as far as unclicking "Msnmsgr", clicked ok then the following message appeared

roddydogs - there's only my laptop and I'm the only user. When I start the computer I don't need to log in (is it automatic) but if I use hibernate then I click on my name (password) which is shown on the screen.fitzroy0
