Singapore is even more expensive than Malaysia. You will not have the choice that you have in Malaysia.

Just take your time. Sit and draw breath. You have a bit of time yet.

For Langkawi look at Casa del Mar. We have friends just back from there and loved it. Were no kids there either.

Half board is breakfast and evening meal. Full board includes lunch.

You just need to decide if you really want to be having all of your meals in the hotel? Same menu every day? The Casa del Mar is right in the middle of Cenang Beach. It's really only one road but there are plenty of bars and restaurants around so you can try something different every day - from top-end dining to a beach barbecue (there's a great BBQ place which does loads of steaks and freshly caught fish while you sit on the beach. Haute cuisine it isn't. I just can't remember the name) . Hotels love to push HB and FB as it means they get the money even if you don't eat in the hotel.

Personally, I never book anything more than B&B (and often I sleep in and miss the second B)

This quote looks better - but I still think you may struggle for things to do in KL for a week and it's a fairly expensive city by SE Asia standards (but still cheap compared to home)

The whole attraction of Langkawi is that there isn't much to do apart from relaxing but KL isn't a very restful place.

i was thinking we can do one thing a day like:
    visit a theme park
    go site seeing
    shopping
    visit a hindu temple
    go watch a movie
go to a few bars and clubs
