What yeast and flour works for you in a breadmaker ??

  • I use Hovis yeast. I tried Sainsburys and wasn't that impressed, but the flour is fine. I use half white half wholemeal and a handfull of mixed seeds.

Lidl white flour, wholemeal is probably dove's farm and yeast from dove's farm or allinson's. Just try not to keep the yeast too long
  • Allinson's strong white mixed with their mixed seed (I think that's what it is).(1lb of white and 4ozs of the seeded one).
I bought a load of the white the other week as it was on offer at 80p a bag.
I also use the yeast in the orange box as it works out cheaper than the sachets.

Another one here who uses Doves Farm yeast. I've used ASDA own brand if I can't get the Doves Farm one, but I don't think it's so good.

I use ASDA / Tesco / Sainsburys own brand flour (to be honest, I don't notice a difference with the flour!) I always chuck in some seed or other for instance sunflower or flax - usually I use a handfull or so of sesame seeds and use sesame oil. Pumpkin seeds and pumpkin oil makes a nice loaf as well.

I know this sounds really basic, but how much yeast does everyone use for a loaf? I've had so many disasters with loaves from my BM when I add all the ingredients separately that I've started using the packedt of bread mix which is a real cop-out. It could be the yeast I have used (Asda) but the 1tsp in the recipes in my book produces a doughy brick.

Given that I'm making a special journey to Mr Ts today to buy Doves on recommendations from this thread ( I'm normally an Asda woman, HATE Mr Ts!) I need results!
Oh dear, here we go again.

    Which BM do you own?

I have a Panni and for the medium loaf I use 1+ 1/4 teaspoons of yeast. Give the Doves Farm yeast a try, I do think it gives better results :)

I have a really cheapie Hinari. The timeer has conked out (so bang goes the hot fresh bread we used to have for breakfast) but the basic thing works fine with the packet mixes.

I am thinking about getting one of the 2 Pannis that everyone on here recommends but as they cost +/- £100 I can't do it just yet. It will probably be a Christmas present. Meanwhile I would like to get the basics right - I'm sure my little machine is capable of it and the problem is 'operator error'!

Anyway, I've bought my Doves and put a basic white on with 1 rounded tsp of yeast, so I'll keep you posted on the results.

    Thanks for the help.

Hope the bread works out better for you with the Doves yeast :)

I know it is still a lot of money, but if you are thinking of getting one as a Christmas pressie for yourself (or are planning on twisting someones arm to buy one for you ;) ), Amazon currently have the SD255 for £91.53 and the SD254 for £83.99 (were £117.40 & £97.82)

Tis true. And there is 3% on Quidco until tonight.

Will be using a bit of persuasion on DH when he gets home ;)
