My DD starts yr11 too Bethamkim and is 16 in April. I understand that CTC and CB will continue for them until the 31st August 2010 (the "end" of the educational year). Once the 1st Sept 2010 hits and they are not in school/college, then the CTC and CB for them will stop, but should carry on if they are (and we tell CTC and CB!!). Its great reading this thread - I didn't know that there could possibly be a break/reduction next summer in payments so at least now I know and can budget accordingly while its sorted out.
  • Thanks for all the support everyone. It's nice to know that it's not just me.

Other information that might be helpful has just come from a friend whose daughter has jsut left school after A levels. She said she wasn't going to go to uni, so her tax credits stopped as soon as she left school in June.

When she got good results and an offer, she changed her mind and is going on to uni. The tax credit people have said her Mum can now claim the CTC to be extended to the 31 August. Hope that helps someone.

    Thanks for the explanation.

I would never shout at an advisor anyway as it's just not an acceptable way to behave imo.

But that said, I do feel frustrated that advisors are not warning people of this. They aren't supposed to presume anything without having written guidance to follow unfortunately.

I do feel many claimants would not be too bothered if told in June/July that their payments may stop for a few days in September, just while it is being processed.

Some would moan and some wouldnt, I would prefer to give them a warning either way.

I feel people are more likely to shout when they suddenly find themselves without a payment, and ring in a panic, to then be told this always happens.

One would hope every advisor who takes a call from an anxious parent in September would remember to tell people from the start the following year, but that doesn't seem to be happening. (Staff turnover perhaps?)

It cannot be better to leave people in ignorance just because it may not happen (but in all probability will). Agreed.

Apart from anything else, it must increase the workload in September and yet it is avoidable... :confused:A lot of it is avoidble if the customer is warned but again we get in to bother if we dont follow guidance :([/QUOTE]

    £652 per month benefits.

Kim, I'd normally ignore this, but feel that you haven't thought of all the facts.

I am a local authority foster carer. The fee I get does not cover the cost of running a household, or my children, so I am dependent on tax credits to be able to continue to foster children.

The child I have in placement is so severely sick and disabled that no other place could be found for them. Without my nursing background, and the tax credits he/she would be in a children's nursiong home at around £4000 per week.

I think I give good value to the taxpayer.

PS the he/she bit is to help confidentiality, not because I don't know.

    This is correct.

CTC runs until 31st August after the 16th birthday automatically.

It will then only run as long as the child is in non-advanced full time education and would end on the date of their last exam or last day of attendance at school/college (whichever is later).

If the child is going to Uni the CTC will run additionally until 31st August.

the exact same thing happened to me this week too. i filled the formout in may to say that my son was continuing to college in sept, got award notice said my money would be reduced, i rang up was told he had put it in the system and everything would be fine, then this week i go to the bank and i am £50 short.
apparently tho it wont be paid back to me when it is back throught the system this week, it will be spread out for the rest of the year!! he assured me that i would end up with the same amount by the end of the year but i am not sure how much a week it will be going up by to make up for the £50 i am down this week, he said 2p a week... well that doesnt make £50 by april!!! well there isnt much i can do about it tho, but it just came at the wrong time kids start back to school/college and i am skint!!!!! and my son's ema hasnt been sorted out so i am going to have to give him money to get to college each day arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sorry to rant just wrong timing!!!! This is exactly what happened to us, told them way back in may my son was staying on. I have also phoned them 3 times I asked when the paperwork notification etc would be posted to me. I was told first week in Sept, nothing has arrived. Went to the bank last Friday and payment not in, does anyone think the payments will be in this coming friday? I have my doubts even with them telling me the payments would continue. Its a drop in our income and i'm worried.
    I love this place :j:T:j
  • I just rang to check that my 16 year old was marked on the system as still being in education (I had told them back in April but obviously the system can't implement it til September), apparently he is showing as in education and my updated award notice is on it's way but she told me the new figures and tried to explain them, can anyone confirm? She said that my annual award had been reduced this year on the assumption he would leave school and the yearly amount was then evenly split throughout the year, now the system knows he's staying on then we are due a large "catch-up" payment plus higher payments per month?

If this is really how it works then I'm going to hit big problems next year between April and September as I'll have 3 children that are over 16 but staying on in school (and yes I do know they are staying on, daughter wants to do 6th year and the boys have special needs and aren't able to cope in the workplace for a long time yet )

    Don't worry.
Did not receive my payment today as normal despite being assured mid Aug that everything had been processed. Phoned tax credit office (0845 grrr) and was told that everything had been sorted and payment will be made this Wednesday. Notification letter should be out by the end of the week. Need this to sort out daughters EMA.
    More frustrating than worrying
  • Hi,

The reason it doesnt keep going past 31st August is because the child is 16 so can legally leave full time education.

subsoniccoyotre - this is only true in some cases.

My son's 16th birthday fell in August so he was 16 on the 31st but was not legally entitled to leave school. He was a year away from sitting GCSEs.

If Child Benefit (administered by HMRC) knows that a child cannot legally leave school and continues to pay CB for another year because their birthday falls in July or August then why cant Tax Credits (also administered by HMRC).

It is HMRCs fault that people are cross with the operators in these cases, their rules are completely illogical.
