I collected my grandson from school today. He started in reception last week. The children all looked lovely in their uniforms. The little girls had grey skirts or pinafores and the boys had grey shorts or long trousers. They all had black shoes and white polo shirts. All stuff you can buy at really good prices at Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, M & S and lots of other places, all really good value. All the children were wearing school sweatshirt with logo from local uniform shop. I think his cost £9 and he has two. The children all looked really smart the sweatshirt is very good quality. I agree with uniforms but dont see why they have to cost a fortune, this C of E primary has excellent results and OFSTED report. The over priced uniforms are a rip off, my youngest is still at school and his sweatshirt cost £38 and the quality is awful (I wont mention how washed out they are within weeks as when I did that on another thread I got a lecture on how to do my washing!!!!!) The quality of uniform isn't linked to price in my experience. At my son's school they get a kick back, at grandsons school the school supplies them all with school book bags and no kick back. When we go into my sons school its like being mugged, the appeals for money, letters about holidays etc never seems to stop. The school is excellent but no better than the school the older ones went to which had a more practical approach.

I have four children, only one still at school, I have bought uniform for a total of five schools and hopefully won't have to buy any ever again. The smartest uniform was the cheapest, the most expensive was smart, current school is second most expensive and definitely worst.

I swear I am so sick of posts like these, you know school is coming up and you know you have to buy uniform, save up.

    Well we are back,just.

First of all I'll comment on the above quote... We knew school was coming up, we did save, but were not prepared to pay the extortionate prices for a cheaply made logo'd uniform when we can buy a sweatshirt, of better quality, for a 5th of the price.

    So onto the meeting..

Govenors turned up and put forward their argument that because the school has not long come off a substandard marking from ofsted they wanted to improve the image of the school, at the beginning of the meeting they said they were in no position to change their policy.

We discussed long and hard the cost of the uniform, which the govenors claimed was 'standard' across the borough. Luckily I had done my research and found the prices of logo'd clothing from other schools, most of which were half the price of the ones for our school. I also had contacted most the other schools in the area and asked if they allowed alternative uniform, (i.e. Asda uniforms) and all but one, which is a private school agreed that alternative uniform was acceptable.

Again the govenors refused to budge, insisting that if we continued to send our children to the school in anything but the required uniform the children would be sent home.

At this point one of the other parents brought to our attention an e-mail she had received from the LEA. The email clearly stated that their position was that all school uniform MUST be available at a reasonable price, and that unless the school is privately funded it was their opinion that 'alternative' uniform was acceptable, however the school could insist that badges are sewn into non standard uniform.

It has been agreed that sew on badges will be made available. However, the school govenors said this would be a major cost and they had already looked at this and each badge would cost approx £5.

Again it looks as though they are trying to make money from the parents which is out of order IMHO.

We finally came to an agreement that the parents, and the school will look to source 1 manufacturer to make the badges at as low a cost as possible, but ensuring that there is some quality in the finished product. At least this way we will get to know the actual cost of these badges. (so if anyone knows where we can get these made any info would be a great help).

It has been agreed that badges must be sewn onto any non standard uniform by the start of the spring term, i.e. after Christmas.

So I suppose we have got the result we wanted, and can now put this all behind us.

Many thanks for all the messages of support.

    Power to you dori2o.

    Glad you made some progress.

Even if the badges are £5, at least you can unpick them and sew then on the next years uniform.

    Glad you got things sorted.

If you're looking for someone to make the badges maybe you could get a couple of samples therefore saving buying any :)

  • Good job you and others had done homework as it seems the school would otherwise have continued to screw you! Can't believe their arrogance!

But from what I can gather most of the other parents knew the rules and kitted their children out in the correct uniform before term started.

They obviously read the infomation provided by the school before term started.

So if you had done this back before the summer instead of jumping up and down in anger then you could have brought your Asda uniform, sewed the badges on and sent them in the correct uniform. Instead you decided the rules didn't apply to you and your do what you wanted. Pathetic.

The school don't currently supply sew on badges, that is why they are looking for a manufacturer to make and supply them.

If you had bothered to read page 1 of the thread, (post 8), you would have realised this. Pathetic.
It's wouldn't have not wouldn't of, shouldn't have not shouldn't of and couldn't have not couldn't of. Geddit?
