Is anyone putting money behind the bar??

Are you mad? If they can't afford to come they don't have to! Or they can stay in a Travelodge and taxi! You are not seriously suggesting that if people cannot pay for people's drinks all evening they shouldn't celebrate their marriage? When I got married we got £1000 from my parents and put it straight behind the bar and it lasted most of the night, (was over 13 years ago now though). If I invite people to my wedding then why should they pay stupid hotel prices because I want a stupidly expensive hotel? Your celebration, you pay. Simple. If you can't afford it don't do it.Wildly my mind beats against you, yet the soul obeys. :heartpuls

Our friends had a free bar at the reception up until the end of the meal. It was disgusting the way people abused it - there were tables full of untouched drinks...the bill came to £4500...
We had two drinks each - you can only drink so much - but would have been perfectly happy paying.

i have NEVER been to wedding with a free bar, we had an open toast, but that was it,
money behind the bar......wud not dream of it!!!
if MIL wants that, then let MIL pay for that!
I went to my cousins wedding a couple of years ago it was in a lovely hotel ceremony and all, and there was wine and champagne with the meal and the bar was free in the afternoon - we all fully expected it to run out but it continued to be free until the end - I dread to think what it cost them, our side alone is a large family of heavy drinkers, however a lot of us went into another bar and paid for drinks as we actually felt guilty about the free booze and what it must be costing them. The round for our table alone was around £37 and there was approx 10 to a table and about 15 tables.
Don't do it! whatever MIL says.Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.0 -

I think having a free bar is a cultural thing.
The only weddings I have been to that I haven't had to pay for drinks have been at venues that don't have a bar - these have both provided bottles of wine (red and white) for each table.
I haven't minded buying drinks and if the drinks are expensive I simply drink less!
Even if I won the lottery I'm not sure I would have a free bar. It seems to turn even the nicest people into complete loons - and I don't want people to remember my wedding as the one they spent with their head in the loo...0 -
If they are staying at the hotel surely there's a tap in the room? If not there's always the tap in the toilets!:DWildly my mind beats against you, yet the soul obeys. :heartpuls
