    What a moaning !!!!!.

If I sell something on Ebay and have to make a special trip to the post office it costs me £3.00 in bus fares. So sometimes I actually make a loss if I sell something for 99p and £1.00 P&P

  • A bidder is very unlikely to know how much an item will cost to post, even more so if it's sellers standard rate and not specified how it will be sent. They are putting their trust in the buyer not to overcharge and often the only way they can see this is by waiting till the item arrives. I'm more a seller than a buyer and always charge honest P&P and it frustrates me when I give someone my custom and they rip me off.

I'd like to see a breakdown of postage and packaging costs on the listing if it's more than you'd expect to pay for the postage and the packaging the item arrives in.

Fair enough if some people factor in bus fare/petrol/handling charge but why aren't they honest about it when they list the item?
  • It's very hard to defend overcharging by 50% by experienced ebayers but understandable by some just starting out.

Those who squinny about it being OK to do are usually those doing it.

I spotted some trainers recently then I saw P&P of £14.99. I emailed the seller to ask if it was a mistake as usually I ship at around £4.99 and pay up to £6 when buying.

He replied that it was correct as it was to make a few ££ and to cover his fees! 10/10 far having brass balls but his DSRs showed he was close to being NRU'd.

I bought something off ebay which i arrived today.

I am happy with it but I paid £4.50 for P&P and it actually only cost £2.70 to send. It was posted in a plastic bag which I doubt would of cost the remainder of the P&P charge.

I looked again at the item description etc and the seller isnt one of those that states that they also charge you for their time, petrol to get to the p.o., for the extra air they breathe whilst posting it etc etc but I am a bit miffed that they've nearly doubled the charge.

    Anything I can do?

I'd contact them, pointing out the difference, and ask them if they'd like to justify their rates before you leave feedback.

Dont sell on eBay then, no one forces you to!

I agree the P&P includes PACKAGING but I dont call a a plastic carrier bag packaging, albeit they probably got it for free.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Think I'll send them a friendly message and see what happens

Also I am not a 'moanin' anything thank you, this is the first time in five years on eBay that I have EVER even thought about complaining about the P&P price.

Why not just start your items £3 higher and if they don't sell you only lose the listing fee? Or save several items to sell at the same time to spread the cost?

Starting £3 higher means 30p extra FVF plus possibly extra insertion fee. I'm pretty sure the seller is not going to absorb those costs from his/her profit margin, so why does a buyer WANT to pay more for something ?

extra 30p versus selling at a loss.
    tricky one

Yes I'm aware of that. Maybe that paticular seller just isn't cut out for E-Bay ;)
