Although we have been engaged a few months, I got my ring at the weekend!!! We went to John MacIntyre and Sons in Glasgow and I would recommend it to anyone!
Choosing from around 8 trays within our price range, each tray had 16 rings. I picked 15 that I liked into another tray and then together we narrowed it down to two - a 9 diamond cluster and a 3 diamond rubover. They both had 0.5ct diamond. I then asked H2B to make the final choice and I came away with the cluster! It is gorgeous and similar to this but in white gold - http://www.johnmacintyre.co.uk/?product&products_id=36375
The ring had to be sized for me but they do that on the premises and we went back a couple of hours later to pick it up.
The service was fantastic, and it's also worth asking if you qualify for their privilege card which gives another 10% off, and a couple of free chocolates as you are leaving the shop aswellNo longer ...tobe! My advice would be to try and find out what she would like, then look everywhere for the nicest one that you can comfortably afford.
Thanks,

Some great advice on here, but it's still a mindfield.
Looking at a £1.7k budget for a ring - intending to propose on a city break in December, just wonder if anyone can offer advice on what I should be looking at for that price.
Only condition being it has to be platinum and princess cut.
Tempted to my girlfriend pick, but also like the idea of having the ring when proposing more.
Any advice appreciated.0 -
Thats a great budget to have and you are right lots of choice...
you are a lot of the way there to selecting your ring if you know the metal and style..
just colour and clarty and size to sort out...
you could look at stones in 0.5 carat and get a good colour and clarity..or you could get a larger stone and lose a little on clarity...
I have to say with a budget like that I would do the TRINKET RING proposal and then choose the ring with your girlfriend together...but if you feel brave enough about presenting her with a ring why not visit a good local jeweller who will be able to show you in more detail the stones and settings you could achieve for your price...
generally the better the colour and clarity ..the better the sparkle/brightness of the stone. Some people go for smaller diamond of quality..whilst others are not so concerned about the stone and go for a larger more cloudy ring...that has to be your choice but do go and look at the spectrum of diamonds available as there really is a difference when you pu 2 diamonds from differing parts of the scale together!
bet of luck with your searchfrugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Didnt realise there was an engagement thread!
Are fraser hart overpriced? Theres a few in the window that I know my girlfriend would love- ranging from about £1100 to £1400.
The problem is Im not sure my haggling skills will work in a sophisticated establishment like this! You reckon I could get 20% off if I flash the cash in their faces?
I plan on proposing in February (dont worry- not valentines day!). You reckon shops will be more likely to haggle before or after xmas?0 -
Ive managed between 10-15 % discounts in clive ranger by asking is that your best price for cash...all I can suggest is try it...have you looked in independant jewellers...they are open to more offers and often have rings that would be more bespoke than fraser hart.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
