this is a random comment i know but while i was looking at my house insurance today i thought i'd pop in on this thread and give a quick reminder for all those who have just gotten engaged and got their ring remember to change your house insurance so you specify the engagement ring as an item on it because most policies will only pay out £1500 for a single unspecified high risk item.
if the ring itsn't over £1500 then your fine but i know while my OH paid under this amount for my engagement ring we got the certificate from the jewellers specifying it's proper value which a good bit over the £1500.
the only reason i'm saying this is a friend had her engagement ring stolen and she'd never realised that you have to specify high risk items like engagement rings or you'll only get a portion of the price and she had a horrible time with the insurers trying to get the full amount so the ring could be replaced.0 -

I really cannot recommend these guys enough - fantastic quality products, fantastic customer service, and you can get far more for your budget here than on the high street.
Did you not get a valuation certificate with it? We did and was worth almost double as well.0 -
I just bought a ring for my now fianc! a few weeks ago from Samara James, fantastic value, quality and customer service as already mentioned. Best of all she loved it, and that's what it comes down to. Would recommend them highly to anyone who asks.
I also got a valuation certificate with it but this was done by Samara James, I am assuming scottie paid for an extra valuation from elsewhere to confirm that this was correct.0 -
Yup thats right, it did come with the valuation certificate0

Not all policies are so low - when we got engaged our policy stated any single item over £2,500 and as my ring cost that 4 years ago, it was added on as a named item. The single item limit is now £3k, and our local independant jewellers have valued the ring at a cost of £2,850 to replace.
I would suggest that you specify your engagement ring for all risks on your contents policy, then you know it is covered if anything untoward should happen (eaten by cat/dog, swallowed by Dyson, lost down drain / grid, stone lost, stolen etc)0 -
I've been reading this thread for the past couple of weeks, since my boyfriend proposed to me. Its been very insightful! I keep changing my mind which ring to go for. Wondering about whether second hand/vintage rings might be worth looking into, perhaps to find something affordable. Might be a way to find something a little more unusual, perhaps with a saphire or emerald. Does anyone know of any reputable websites? Had a look on Ebay but unsure whether this is a reliable place to look for something like that.0

Hi,
Does anyone know quite how noticeable the difference is between Samara James' premium cut and hearts and arrows cut? I've read enough to know to take cut quite seriously, but as a 'premium' cut is presumably a top-flight cut in any case I'm needing help.
I'm looking at either getting:
0.4 carat, VS2, F or
0.5 carat. SI1, G
The second's around £70 more. I'm not worried about how the ring might look under a microscope so don't consider the move from VS2 to SI1 that important. The move from F to G would definitely be visible side-by-side, but I think the move to 0.5 carat would more than balance out any loss there. So, without considering the cut I'd say that, for me, the 0.5 at £70 more just about pips the 0.4 carat - there's something about 0.5 carat that, from the rings I've seen, just seems to look more substantial.
So, how big is the difference between Samara James' premium and hearts-and-arrows cut?0 -
I bought my partner a Clogau engagement ring which I can then purchase the matching wedding ring. I bought my from Gus Jones Jweellers, the biggest stockists of welsh gold. visit their website at gusjonesjewellers co uk

i'm sure it's been mentioned in this thread somewhere (but there's A LOT of pages!)... but doesn't it take the romance out of the proposal if you later go and choose a ring? what do you propose with at the moment of asking?!0
