Don't do it!!! If you ask them what the clarity of the diamond is the best you will get is P with them.... No offence to anyone who bought from EJ but you can make your money go a LOT further elsewhere!

I didnt look that closely at the clarity in EJ, but in the window they looked dead nice! Clarity of mine is K i think

K would be the colour, which isn't bad. Clarity ratings are (from best to worst) F, IF, VVS, VS, SI and I or P are the worst.

  • Stumpjumper, seeing as you know far more than me about the proportions, may I ask what you think of mine - we got it because we fell in love with the diamond and its sparkle.

Would the same apply with the depth and table on a princess cut? I'm just trying to compare (and I'm interested)!

    Square Modified Brilliant
    Measurements: 4.72 x 4.64 x 3.39 mm
    Carat Weight: 0.62
    Color Grade: D
    Clarity Grade: VVS2
    Proportions:
    Depth: 73.1 %
    Table: 70 %
    Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
    Culet: None
    Finish:
    Polish: Excellent
    Symmetry: Very Good
    Fluorescence: None
    Clarity Characteristics: Feather, Pinpoint

To answer your first question about table and depth on a Princess - no, different rules apply with regards the proportions of a Princess. They do tend to be cut deeper than a round stone, and have a larger table, like yours these measurements are around the 70 something mark.
the only rule i use - more as a rejection rule than a picking rule (as fancy shapes like Princess, Emerald, Pear can only really be picked by your eye as the 'ideal' proportions are still being studied - the cutting of round brilliants have been perfected over the last 70/80years ) - is to reject stones with a table % that is greater than the depth %. yours in the opposite, which is fine.

  • Thank you so much Tedios and Stumpjumper, if you could have a look that would be great, to be honest i dont think i could go to the price of the one on whiteflash you saw, with a ring still to buy!

To be fair i have yet to see that diamond yet, i think i may have a look, as i think i may be able to haggle it down a bit further, and as the saying goes, if it looks right, then it is right for me!

However if you can find a better one for a similar price i will gladly virtually shake you by the hand! :)
  • Hi All

I have been looking on qualitydiamonds.co.uk, seems pretty good although it does contain alot of information that I don't completely understand. I have read about the 4 C's etc but I am unsure about Table %, Depth %, Girdle etc???

The diamonds I have been looking at are...

    http://www.qualitydiamonds.co.uk/Find.aspx?item=Loose&code=24--55303001

Also, what's the advantage of going for Platinum instead of White Gold, is it just that Platinum is stronger?

    Many thanks in advance
  • the first link - the Round Brilliant - the given proportions look good (ie nothing to reject the stone fore) but without futher information - like pictures i couldnt say for certain. and QD.co.uk wouldnt be able to provide them as they dont have the diamond inhouse - they are mainly drop shippers. that is virtually all the stones on their list you see are held by wholesellers, and QD just put their price to the wholesellers list, and the same list of diamonds can be seen on many online stores (and quite often also supply the high street with their stones)

theres nothing bad in this practice, is a very efficent way, as the sellers hold no stock, and never see the diamonds - they just call the wholeseller who ships the diamond to you. but there is sometimes a problem when someone else has sold the stone through their store, and the wholeseller hasnt updated their list. QD will offer an equivalent stone, and i believe you can visit their office to view stones within your budget by appointment.

theres not much i can say about the pear, as with many fancy shapes its a case of need to see in person to assess.

I believe the plating wears off white gold and you need to have it replated every few years, but with platinum this would not be done. I also find it's heavier (maybe this is in my head lol) which I like.

Would you say it is best to go to Birmingham Jewellery Quarter or London Hatton Gardens with an idea of what we want/price etc but just have a browse, find what we want and then buy online or is it best to buy direct?

I haven't really done much research into Hatton Garden or Jewellery Quarter yet, my impression is that theyre kind of like market style and I feel a bit cautious about who to trust etc?

    Thanks again....
  • i would say, if its a long trip - then its not worth going.
yes there are alot of vendors there, but any savings will be wiped out by the cost of getting there.

have a look round your local stores, have a look through Pricescope's 'Show me the ring' thread - Pricescope is a Diamond advice forum, similar to MSE. the Eye Candy thread has been going many years now, and probly showcases a few million $ worth of members diamonds which will give a broad selection of diamonds.

My personal opinion is that, with a good, small independant jeweller you can get very good diamond, for a good price. And you can also do the same online.
There are also specalist USA diamond vendors who, while not always the cheapest (tho often they are cheaper than the average UK highstreet) specalise in producing the top performing diamonds - that really sparkle ALOT!

    Im confused:(

Went to look at rings today, thinking how great it would be to try on the emerald cut rings. AND! I didnt like them :(

Well I DID, but they didnt feel like 'the one'.

I think I prefer a much smaller diamond now, so Im completely confused :(
