  • hello there, im looking for assistance on choosing a diamond engagement ring.
ive been looking at some of the sites mentioned previously.
ive found this, just wondering if this seems like a good buy. http://www.qualitydiamonds.co.uk/Ring.aspx

only thing is i cant find the right ring on this site to add this diamond to.

also wondering is this a good time to buy a diamond? how is the diamond industry affected by the other economical forces at the moment? is this resession affecting it,are prices dropping, going up or still steady?
i know very little about diamonds to be honest and would appreciate some help here.

unfortunatly that link just directs you to the main diamond search page, rather than a specific diamond :)
2009 wins: Signed Saxon CD, Solar Torch, Drumsticks, Priest Feast Tix, Watch, Hammerfest tix

I can only tell you about general stuff - I don't know exactly how the industry is doing as I don't work it in.

But the main factor is the GBPUSD spot rate. Not so long ago you were getting more than 2 dollars to the pound, now it's around the 1.45 mark, so that pushes the price up in pounds as I think most of the metals and diamonds are bought in dollars.

There was a time when platinum got cheaper per ounce but that was a few months ago when the car industry in America was on the verge of collapse (platinum is used in catalytic converters). There was a US bill that helped, but whether that will help long term... we only have to look at our car industry.

And when economies fall, gold rises. And its currently on about a 20 year high - generally speaking.

But tbh, things aren't going to get dramatically worse or better for commodities for you to worry about whether it's a good time to buy a piece of jewlery. If you want to wait 20 years the price could double or half!

When buying diamonds try and do the following things.

    1. Try and buy a diamond that is GIA or AGS certified. GIA XXX which is excellent cut, symmetry and polish. The two labs differ in that GIA work more on grading the proportion of a diamond and less on performance and is more subjective. The AGS lab grades more on performance grading of a diamond- More technologically absolute.

It doesn't hurt to check online or give the online vendors an email when sourcing a diamond.

I would be asking the retail stores if they can provide you with an idealscope image and an Aset. An idealscope image at the very least.

Or if thats not possible, you can take down the specifications from the certificate, post them here and we can give you advice on your intended purchase. We may be able to find something online that will give you a comparison.

  • Does anyone have any advice on buying a trillion diamond at all? I was thinking of emerald cut but notice the comments about the clarity and colour due to there being fewer facets. Anyone got any suggestions? I really love this ring and would like a carat in about E/F and VS2

If anyone has any useful advice, it would be greatfully received!

Well Ive been hunting, and I think I like this one: http://www.beaverbrooks.co.uk/index.cfm?event=catalogue.showProduct&productID=3395

Now Im pretty sure thats overly expensive for the diamond quality. What you think?

BUT can anyone help me find another one like it but cheaper?

Although Ive looked on bluenile as it appears cheap, I like the way the band goes very thin at the diamond, and bluenile dont have this :(

That is one beautiful ring. I know nothing about trillion cuts, but that is very nice. I imagine it'd be very expensive, but if you can afford it, go for it.

kr15snw, yes that is overpriced. I had quick look at some of the websites of the Hatton Garden jewellers and found these:

At Hatton Garden they will make you anything you like. Do you live near there? Or Birmingham for the Birmingham Quarter? If you do then I'd say it'd well be worth a trip there.

    MASSIVELY OVERPRICED!!!!

Have you got an independent jeweller near you or better yet, birmingham's jewellery quarter or Hatton Garden in London? It may be worth the train fare to get to one of them. You can have ANYTHING you want made. Just email/send the jeweller that pic and they will make it for you.

Im in Plymouth, so about 4 hours from both :(

I guess I could encourage the OH to go there. Ideally I think he wants me to find a ring I like so that he can go back and buy it without me knowing, lol.

Such pretty rings though... Look pretty pricy though...

    Ideally I think we're looking at £750 - 1k budget.

You may be able to deal with the jewellers via the internet/post. Google hatton garden, many of them have a website.

Also use google.co.uk to search for diamonds. Many websites will come up. If you're worried they're not legit, just post here first!!

Ideally I think I need to try them on, know what I mean?

I may have a good look around town again (fraser hart etc) and see if theres any I love. Then head online and find it cheaper :D
