Wife had to take time off work to care for sick Daughter

    She has no right whatsoever to paid time off to care for a dependent, regardless of the illness, no matter how harsh that may seem. There simply is no law which allows for it.

    The GP also has no right to sign her off to care for someone else, as the law is clear on this, although he can write a letter of support to the employer explaining the situation and advising time off.     we totally appreciate that her employer is being very good to her, and i guess it goes to show that they do really value her in her job, and want do their best to help her and keep her

    i think you are quite right, the docs letter is probably more one of support, and simply advising time off, which the school have so far obliged. Which has so far only been a few weeks at the end of last term.

  • If its the case of taking time off to care for a dependent i think she can ask for flexible working which might help

    that is the route she will probably go down - working during the hours our daughter is back in school and hoping that our daughter can gradually up her hours, and my wife will up hers accordingly

    I don't think anyone has an issue with the lady taking time to care for her child - and rightly so. People are simply pointing out what rights (or lack thereof) she has in the eyes of the law. This should really be in the employment forum as it's not benefit related really.

    I cannot help with regards to your wife but did not want to read and not reply.

    Best wishes for the recovery of your lovely daughter. It is good to know that the school is able to care for her when she is able to be there, that must be a comfort to you both :T

    thanks, totally realise that.
    she is going into to see them tomorrow, to see what the best thing to do for all involved is.

    its all very frustrating, as she wants to go back, but is not in a position to do so, until our daughter is ready to go back to full time.

    it does seem to help that the school value her is a top member of staff, so really don't want to lose her

    What is nasty about saying that professional people shouldn't misuse their powers, particularly when it goes against the ethical guidelines of their own professional body! These guidelines are there to protect both individuals and society and should be adhered to, even if it doesn't suit your particular situation.

    As your wife seems to work in education, I'll take your other comment as a compliment!

    i hope that your little girl is doing well and makes a full recovery soon

    as for all the harsh, heartless, just damn right nasty replies put yourself in the op familys shoes for a moment they are obveiously a working family that has had there little girl ill and needeing an op im sure they did not want this to happen.
    Its not exactly if his wife sat there one nigh and said oh i cant be ar*ed to work anymore but how can i get paid full wages and not work i know daughter fall in need an op

    as op pointed out they already use child care but obveiously they feel that they would rather care for there daughter whist she is still recovering wich she obveiously is by only being able to return to school part time

    i think the whole situiation has probably been a very stressful time for the whole family and they probably want nothing more than for there lives to return to normality but things get thrown at you and you have to deal with them as best you can im sure they did not think they would come on here for advice only to be moaned at
    come on people have a heart
