Wife had to take time off work to care for sick Daughter

Hi

Hope someone can help here...

My wife works in a local school, and is employed by the County Council.

Our 5 year old Daughter had a major operation back in early June, resulting in a 6 week stay in hospital.

My wife was signed off by a Doctor, and given the ok by the school to take time off to care for her whilst she was in hospital and when she came home.

As my wife works in a school, it has obviously helped having the summer holidays off anyway.

Our Daughter is still not quite ready to go back to school full time, and Doctors have suggested she goes back 2 mornings a week, and gradually progress from there.

My wife was hoping to go back and help at the school she works at whilst our Daughter is at school part time, but someone has told her that if she does this she may not then be able to claim full pay, and will only be paid for any hours she actually does.

She was under the impression that she could have upto 6 months off from work on full pay whilst caring for our Daughter, before the situation is reassessed, or she has to go back to work, or take half-pay???

Hopefully it won't come to that, and our Daughter makes a full recovery soon. But it would be helpful if my wife knew what her rights are, just incase the School that she works for start to get funny with her.

Can anyone tell us what her full rights are?

I'm happy to answer any further questions you may need answering in order to give further advice.

Thanks in advance

She is entitled to 6 months SICK PAY, but as she isn't sick she is isn't entitled to any pay.

6 months off on full pay?

Why should anyone else pay for you to care for your family?

But your wife isn't sick is she? Parental or carers leave is what she should be asking for under the terms of her contract. Doesn't really matter what the doctor writes on a sick certificate, he really should not have issued one. I would be rather cross if I was a council tax payer forking out to pay your wife to look after your child.

I hope your daughter is soon back to full health.

If her employer allows her back to work two morning a week and also pays her for the hours that she's worked after the amount of time she's taken off, then they are being very reasonable.

Why anyone would think that someone would be left on full pay whilst only doing a fifth of their hours is quite odd.
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."
  • Yet another example of GPs misusing the medical certificate system; it really should be tightened up!

    thanks, totally realise that.
she is going into to see them tomorrow, to see what the best thing to do for all involved is.

its all very frustrating, as she wants to go back, but is not in a position to do so, until our daughter is ready to go back to full time.

it does seem to help that the school value her is a top member of staff, so really don't want to lose her
