Does Ryanair check the weight of hand luggage?

I've just found out that one can actually add luggage to be checked-in online
even after the initial booking had been made. That's £10 online rather than
£20 via the call centre or at the airport. See here
http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=CHARGES
What a shame! I've already checked-in on Sunday. Hence it is not possible to
add luggage anymore0 -
When was your last Ryanair flight ? and from what airports?
Thanks for your concern that I might have thought old flight experiences might be useful. Edinburgh Dublin return, Edinburgh Berlin (Sch) return, Glasgow Lanzarote return, Gatwick Cork and Marseille. Etc.
All this year, most since March.0 -

Remember though that Ryanair is currently flying in/out of about 150 airports each of which has their own individual interpretation of how to go about things. Even travelling through 15 of them, which you may have done, has only exposed you to 10% of the experiences possible.0 -

To be fair, I don't think Aileen_Una was trying to say that hand luggage won't get weighed, just that it's not happened to her.
Personally, I don't think previous experiences count one bit - it's likely to be different on any given day, at any airport, on any particular flight. Nobody knows what's going to happen to the OP on their flight. If I know I've got too much weight, I'd rather just accept the charges up front and check my bags in. If I only needed to take the extra weight one way, I'd book 2 separate flights with hold baggage on the outbound and not on the return. For £10, it takes away all the worry about what might happen. After all, the flights have probably cost less than £20 so you can't really complain about paying a few quid more for luggage !
One other point, regarding hand luggage size - depending on how far from the airport you live the best thing to do is pop in with your OWN empty case. We had a couple of bags that we weren't sure about so when passing LPL airport I nipped in and tried them in both Ryanair and Easyjet's cabin bag stands. We now know that we can take them as hand luggage without problems.0 -
We don't risk overweight or oversize hand luggage, simply because you never know if it will be YOUR turn to weigh etc. We measured our usual hand luggage cases and found one dimenson to be a few mm over, so oh took the handles off the top! (still have the pull out one).
We recently flew Stansted to Dublin and back, a family of 4 tried to get through with large trolley hand luggage and two of them also had cool bags as well, they got pulled to one side and told they would have to be checked in.
Stck to the rules and you will most certainly be fine!0 -
a family we met in majorca had to pay 300 quid excess bagage on ryan air, dont know what they had tried to do but had to buy 2 suitcases at airport to shove it in***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0

In Birmingham airport, if your hand luggage is too large, too heavy or too many pieces, you will be offloaded.
No option to pay anything, just offloaded.0 -
Just had to report what I consider as a major success :money:
On a recent Ryanair trip through Stansted, I first got through security with about 12kg (I took mystic_trev's advice from this thread and made sure I had duplicate boarding passes so I could try again if stopped at security)
Then I had to buy a heap of fashion mags for a friend, plus various other World Duty Free purchases, Boots Health club water (2 litres) and separate Pret a Manger bag containing a coffee, croissant and sandwiches.
I didn't weigh the Pret a Manger bag when I arrived at my destination because I'd consumed most of what was in it, but my main bag weighed 19.7 kilos :rotfl:
Beat that if you dare
UYOL0 -
Stick to Ryanair's T&C, which is after all the basis on which you book and you won't have a problem.
If you don't stick to them, and don't have a problem that's that.
just don't complain if you do have a problem.0 -

I agree with that Bob.
It's not so much what personal experiences people report when travelling with Ryanair, it's what they CAN do that's important.
If you've pushed your luck and get caught out, there's only one person to blame - and it ain't Mr O'Leary.
You could have 9kgs in your hand luggage 9 times out of 10 and not get stopped - but if the 10th time you're carrying 13kgs and you do get stopped, it'll be 'get your wallet out' time.0
