Over the last few weeks more and more and more bags are being checked for their EXACT size and weight for Ryanair flights. Stick to what you've paid for (ie. included in your fare) any you should have no problems at all. Try and take a bag that's bigger or heavier and you won't be able to blame anyone else if you end up paying the Big O lots more money.

PS. What the h*ll are these 10KG+ books?
  • Can't say it any better than that :)

These books of yours sound big. Are you carrying them both ways?
Well, first of all, thank you for your detailed answer! I appreciate that!
I'm just carrying the books one way.

And to answer all the speculations about the books - they are simply
heavy textbooks. Just finished my studies and want to leave the books
    with my parents in Germany.

Hard bound books can be very heavy! Take for example, the
"The Complete Calvin and Hobbes" Hardcover version
(I'm not claiming that those are textbooks :))

The collection is not that big volumewise BUT quite heavy:
    it weighs 350.78 oz = 9.94kg

If you make it through security, then at Stansted and the airports I have used lately, the only other check that could ruin your day is the one bag rule, and the strict 55x40x20 cardboard box measure that others have reported in use at the gate which could cost you £30 I think.
I will fly from Bristol. What are your experience with Bristol airport as departure
    airport?

The dimension of my bag does not exceed 55x40x20.

I wish I had booked with easyjet. As probably others also know - there is no
weight restriction on hand luggage but only volume restrictions.
But unfortunately easyjet does not offer the route I need.

Bristol is OK, Departures can get a bit cramped in the mornings especially and the queues for security can be long (but that applies to so many places)

We flew on a return flight from Dublin to Newcastle this weekend and it seemed to me they only do weighing if they have enough time.

At Dublin, the plane was full, we were towards the back of the queue. The first fifty or so got checked but once they realised they were running out of time they didn't check anything after that. At Newcastle there were no checks at all, but that might be because they don't even tell you what gate to go to until 30mins before take off anyway.

It's very hit and miss for me, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Loving how Visa have made their own vending machines in Newcastle airport with bags to fit the dimensions for cabin baggage and weigh your case for you!

Ryanair is actually earning on luggage penalties. I'd always be very strict with weight limits before flying Ryanair :)

It's a sensible business model - reward those that can comply with your transparent terms and conditions and punish those that can't. Much more sensible than rewarding those that can't read.

I don't suppose one of the books could slip into your waistband could it? They won't weigh you, but they might weigh your hand-baggage!

I've never used Ryanair out of Bristol, so can't help there - the airport was undergoing a re-fit last time I was there (May) but could well be finished by now - it looked as if it was causing a bit of overcrowding/inconvenience for some travellers. I like it, as it's a fair size for a local airport, I've always found it to be well-enough run & organised, though I've seen huge queues at the EasyJet check in for the popular flights at peak season.

I like whenever possible just to take hand luggage and have what a security guy once called a 'tardis-like' quality to my packing; I have been known to wear a few extra layers at check in, then disrobe somewhat once I'm safely in departures. I also always wear the heaviest/bulkiest shoes I'm taking away with me, and have actually put my paperback in my coat pocket. The way I look at it is once you get through to deaprtures they're quite happy for you to load yourself up with books, perfumes, water etc etc from the shops in there (I don't -too mean!), and struggle on board with a carrier bag or two extra, so I'm not going to worry myself about it too much. Similarly, I'm not overweight, and until they take to weighing the 'whole package' - passeneger, bags et al, I'm not going to be losing any sleep over it...
Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!
  • Ryanair are *not* happy these days to let people walk onto the plane with more than one bag - even if it's bags from purchases bought airside. Everything has to fit into the 1 bag or it doesn't go as hand luggage, simples!

  • I've just found out that one can actually add luggage to be checked-in online
even after the initial booking had been made. That's £10 online rather than
£20 via the call centre or at the airport. See here
