I have had my hand luggage weighed at Marrakech, but not at EMA (and nor has the FF that I book travel for).
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Thanks everyone!

    I'm still indecisive though :)

Pehaps someone could help if they know what the excess cost would be for going1-2 kilos over? - that would help offset the worry.

incidently, never had hand baggage weighed - ever - (I think) - If they ask to look at my shoulder bag I just make it look very light. as I swing it off with two fingers and bite through the pain!!

If they did it at the gate then it would be £30, if they did it at the bag drop then it would be £20 for the bag itself plus £15 per kg if your total resultant checked bag weight was over 15kg

    Hi Lemontree,
Your quandary is one I have gambled with many times, but it is getting more and more risky. Luckily, I am usually only heavy one way.

It also depends on the airports you are using.

At Stansted for example, I agree with the suggestion that if you can make the bag look light e.g. a small rucksack fully strapped on your back as you pass the first hurdle which is the entrance to airport security, then you can many times still pass through without being challenged.

The way you approach the security agent with printed boarding card in hand, just the right amount of eye contact (not zero, but maybe a little rather than a lot!) and 'I am organised, confident, know where I am going, know that you only want the boarding pass not the passport, and have a nice day too' type body language might help also.

If you get a chance, I suggest you choose your spot too ... you might notice some agents are checking more weights than others, or quite simply if they just had to check a whole bunch of disorganised types in front, then they might easily check yours too if you are carrying it in your hand.

These books of yours sound big. Are you carrying them both ways? If so, I'd say that on Ryanair you are risking a loss. There isn't an excess charge if it is detected at security, but of course if they catch you they quite simply require you to go check in the bag. That's expensive of course as alanrowell just told us. If that happens, AFAIK they don't escort you to the Ryanair pay points so I don't know how they prevent you trying again 5 minutes later at another security point ... not happened to me yet. :D

If you make it through security, then at Stansted and the airports I have used lately, the only other check that could ruin your day is the one bag rule, and the strict 55x40x20 cardboard box measure that others have reported in use at the gate which could cost you £30 I think. As far as I know, they don't weigh at the gate (yet!) ... certainly my most recent flights would have found my cabin baggage weighing around 15kg at the gate including airport purchases :p

Is it just me that is wondering how a couple of books can weigh over 10kg? What is it? A full set of the Encyclopaedia Britannica?:D

No - but security will write something on your boarding pass. The way to get around this is to print out more than one boarding pass ;)
  • Be warned, there are reports of Ryanair weighing bags at the gate as well as checking for size.

Certainly if you get caught, it's your own fault and not a RIPOFF SCAM.
    From Poland...with love.

    They are (they're)
    sitting on the floor.
    Their
books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.
