Phew some debate going on here:eek: Thanks for all the comments

My original question was can anyone see any flaws in the advert?? it just seemed too good to be true and wanted to get 2nd opinions before I go down to the dealer and have a test drive and mention this to them.

Is there anything else I should bear in mind when visiting a dealer, unfortunately I do not have anyone to come with me so want to know what Im talking about, scary

The reason I am going for a new car really is the fact it should be covered by warranty. As I am starting a new job travelling over 100 miles per day I need something that if something did go terribly wrong I wouldnt have to shell out. I can afford £135 a month easily and for a new car I feel thats quite good :). The small engine and low fuel costs is another factor.

Im just so confused arrrgggghhhh. I am torn between Corsa, Peugeot 207, Ford Fiesta and now maybe Toyota Yaris (I like the sportier looking small cars)

currently I have a Peugeot 106 that even 9 year olds are laughing at me in:rotfl: its dented and rattling...So feel its time to have a car I feel proud of

I think your reasons for looking at this car are very valid, and the deal itself seems to represent good value.

I guess you are 'protected' as such in that your car qualifies for the scrappage scheme and thus you are getting a set amount for it no matter where you go. Be aware that a lot of the cheapest monthly payment deals often have a 'baloon' payment, whereas this one doesnt which is good.

Be aware also that the dealer may try to offer a car thats available right now and has metallic paint, alloys, etc, which only adds £x's to the monthly price or you'll have to wait six weeks for the one in the spec you want.

Why not go along, see how it pans out, but make no comment today, then come back on here and tell us how you got on?

By all means take a look at other models that take your fancy. I would print off the deal on the corsa and take it along to other manufacturers dealerships and see if they can put together something similar?

    Good luck!

Ok but then what happens if its a real good deal, will they ring me up and offer me better? If I just walk away will they just leave it?
Will dealerships throw in an extras on new cars?

They will most likely ring you and offer a better deal, if not, go elsewhere.

There are plenty of dealers, all desperate to take your money.

They may or may not come back with a better off - it depends on how much leighway they have - i suspect very little. On 'specials' like this they will be working on waifer thin margins but use the sale to make up the unit quota with the manufacturer. The deal will no doubt still be there on monday, so even if you dont buy today you can always call them up on monday to confirm

    Hey Guys

Right I went in to Lookers Vauxhall and took in the advert in the original post..They said this is a real offer but only available on red and white models.

They offered me the active for £1000 extra, comes with metallic paint and air con, alloy wheels, its looks lovely :)

The finance for this he offered me was £180x 60 (no deposit) per month incl paint and fabric warrantly, alloy repair and loss warranty (basically apparently this helps with depreciation and they offer to buy it back from you at a certain price, but Im a bit confused by this) or £162 without all that

He was trying to get me to decide today but I was good and told him I was going to Ford first

Ford offered me the Fiesta for £198 x 48 which is a bit over my price range and it didnt have air con or metallic paint.

I want to try to get the Vauxhall down to £150 still including all the extras, whats the best way of me doing this and is it likely to happen?

Any advice would be great, Im going back in and test driving bank hol mon

    This car business is confusing

the fiesta is the cheapest option over all, unless you get vauxhall down to the desired £150 a month then the corsa works out cheaper than the fiesta by £500 over all. or am i missing something here?

personally i would have the fiesta, its a fresher looking car vauxhalls dont hide thier age too well. and the interior of the new fiesta is brilliant very well laid out dashboard.

if you dont need all these options, you should be able to add only those you require to the above offer - ie if you only want met paint, then it adds about £300 to the basic price which would be about £5 a month extra, same for a/c - you dont need to spend £1k to upgrade to the active, if its not what you need

The finance for this he offered me was £180x 60 (no deposit) per month incl paint and fabric warrantly, alloy repair and loss warranty (basically apparently this helps with depreciation and they offer to buy it back from you at a certain price, but Im a bit confused by this) or £162 without all that
paint/fabric protection costs about £200, as for the depreciation insurance, otherwise known as Gap Insurance, it can be bought cheaper elsewhere, dont buy it from the dealer - even at £162/m that equates to £9700 - way too much for a small car, for someone on a limited budget

I want to try to get the Vauxhall down to £150 still including all the extras, whats the best way of me doing this and is it likely to happen?
tbh, the liklihood of them dropping the price to £150/m is minimal, as they have already done their discounting up front - £2500 off list price, i doubt they can afford to drop any lower

Any advice would be great, Im going back in and test driving bank hol mon
look at other cars - hyundai, fiat, etc. all have similar cars (but with more twiddles) for nearer the £5k mark

    Hi Claire,

I guess this is pretty much as predicted - the deals on the 'standard' car, but they try to encourage you to 'upgrade'. Unless you really need them, then as someone else has put, they're costing you a lot extra for something that wont ultimately add much to the value of the car come resale time. But i guess only you can decide if budget wise you want to stretch to that. Personally, i think i'd get more satisfaction from the cheapness of the original car than paying quite a bit more for some extras.

Paint and fabric warranty are really unnecessary - its a spray that they put on that can literally be bought for £20 from ebay. This is a huge money spinner for the dealership, so they will push it, but decline it as they're charging you about £300 for it!!! Alloy repair - again, you can get a wheel refurbed for £40, so decline that too. The loss warranty can be bought cheaper online as someone else has put.

£198 is quite a jump up the finance payments. The Fiesta is a good car, but i guess only you can decide if its worth that to you?

I guess to get you down to £150 from £162 means a further discount of approx £650 or thereabouts. They may do this, but i doubt they will have that much room to manuveure. I would try them for it anyway. Tell them your budget is £150 per month, but you've no extra cash to put in the deal and that you will buy if they drop from £162 to £150, then sit back and say nothing. They might meet you half way?

Claire It is a very full price for a relatively low spec Corsa.

Your best bet would be to get a bank loan which allows you to pick and choose and barter.

If you look on Autotrader there are identical Corsas 1year old at £6300 58 reg with 2000 miles. These will still have 2 yrs of manufacturers warranty remaining.

There are much better spec 18 month old 08reg Corsas from about £5.8k - these will have 18 month warranty remaining.
It will give you some idea of the depreciation of your car.
Although you are set on a new car these will still feel brand new to you in comparison to your older vehicle.
You can then trade in sell your old car - if the worst comes to the worst a scrapyard should pick it up and give you £50.

To me saving approx £5K. on price for 1 year difference says it all.
  • There'll be a huge glut of cheap Corsa's around very soon, all the BSM ones are being defleeted as they are being replaced by Fiat 500's, that is one big fleet.

So don't be bamboozled by the sharp suited smooth talking sales staff.

I'm not 100% sure that scrappage is your best deal...have you talked to Suzuki to see what they could offer you on the Swift, or Hyundai with the I20, or you might be better off getting a 6/12 month old car and selling the 106 privately.

Oh and by the way, the Yaris is infinitely better quality than a Corsa and their dealerships are usually top notch too.

When scrappage ends soon, there will be a lull and when nothing is selling you'll soon see prices dropping to get the punters back.
