Thank you SH - nice to know I'm not alone in the car fiasco!
I had a look at the the new debt figure again today and whilst it is horrendous, everything is there and accounted for and I have no more nasty surprises (fingers crossed). I feel a lot lot better tackling a small debt first as well as I think I will be pleased with myself once that has gone as I will of course still be chipping away at the other debts.
Had a more expensive day than I'd liked yesterday as I ended up taking the kids out, but I do want to do something with them whilst they're off. The older one knows that money is tight and even offered to buy some shoes for herself with her pocket money:( She saw a few things she wanted that weren't essential items and so I agreed to go halves with her and she seemed really really pleased with herself for handing over half of the money she has been saving. I hope it makes her better with money than what we have been, but I still felt racked with guilt about it.
We had a good day out though and it will just mean the rest of the month is a bit tighter but sobeit!
Think I may just try out a lucky dip on the lottery tonight - you never know :rotfl::rotfl:1st debt - Next [STRIKE]£583.32[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£408.71 [/STRIKE] £0 :j

Bless your DD:A. Reminds me of when DS2 emptied his piggy bank and offered it to me ( there was about 75p in there:)) ... I then realised I was perhaps talking about money too much:(

That makes me sad and smile at the same time. I was quite impressed to see that DD had saved up £52 from various funds and so don't feel as bad as taking 75p - maybe she can give me some money saving tips :rotfl:1st debt - Next [STRIKE]£583.32[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£408.71 [/STRIKE] £0 :j

My boys are very careful with money when they are spending their "own". They often receive money for Birthdays, Christmas etc and they will spend Hours at ToysRUs or Game deciding how to spend it. If its my money they are not so fussy:):)0

IMD..your DD is learning good valuable lessons for when she is grown up..I think it is good to discuss family finances especially with older kids...with smaller ones I'd say I can't buy this or we won't have enough for that IYSWIM..they then understand that they can't have both and start learning the value of money.I think they can learn bits of stuff from about 3 years old and maybe that can then help them when they are older.0

I think Taxi is right. It's good to teach them young about the consequences of "If we buy this, then we can't afford that".
DD1 really wants a playroom or at least her own room. So every time she asks for money or anything, I remind her that we can't waste money and must save (well obviously that is a euphemism for "repay") in order to get a new house.
I feel for you though. It's not easy0 -

My Mum - despite being Uber-Frugal herself, used to say to me
"If you want to get it, I'll lend you the money" or "If you don't get it now, it'll be gone!"
She is gobsmacked when I say this taught me how to be secure being in debt and not how to manage money!0 -

although you feel guilty about your DD paying for half of the things i bet she's beaming with pride that she's been able to help, or doing something for herself. It will certainly make her appreciate more what she's bought.0
