Hi Hun, sorry you've had the week from hell
My car packed up about 6 months ago - we also need 2 cars. Luckily (or unluckily for her) my Mum had broken her foot, so leant me her very nice car for 3 weeks. After that - I panicked.
OH scraped together £5k and I ended up getting one from the car auctions. They sound daunting, but really aren't. We've bought our last few cars from them. They have everything from bangers to virtually brand new.
My MSE Dad says most of the cars you see second hand in garages are from the auctions. They are just waiting for you to tell them what's wrong - if anything. If you don't bring it back to the garage - bonus! So you can save £££'s. They are guaranteed not to be stolen or have outstanding finance and are often ex-fleet cars, so have been well maintained.
According to Dad, so long as there is no black or blue smoke coming from the exhaust and no rust on the bodywork, you should be ok. It might be worth considering....
Keep ploughing on - you WILL get a break soon, so try not to stress. It's really not worth making yourself ill over xx0 -
Can I agree with the auction idea?
My last car from an auction was a little gem, a VW Polo, 12 years old but only 66k miles and a ful service history. It only cost £500 and has passed 2 MOTs since then.
I'd say the key was to go for one with the longest MOT possible then at worst you would drive it for a year and scrap it if you can't afford to get it through another MOT.0 -
Mine's a Golf and is immaculate. It had 6 months MOT and has just passed again last month - with no work to do! :j
You have to do your homework and know what you want to buy before you go, or you can get carried away. Parker's Guide is the trade handbook that you can get from newsagents to advise you of the going prices, less milage etc as well as trade-in prices.
I have to say, I love the auctions, it's such a buzz - especially if you can bag a bargain!0 -
Evening all
Feeling better, although no real reason why? Boiler is suspended between life and death, I am leaving it to OH as it is a man's area in which he can talk to another man about it ....
Trailed through a load of car stuff and selected a few we are going to see tomorrow for a fun fun fun day out with the kids  Actually they are really excited about it so they will think it's a proper day out. We have a limit and found a few within that limit and going to drive down a bargain.
Few precarious things going on at work but haven't got the time to worry about them until they happen as beyond my control!
BTD - maybe we all have some days when we think a DMP is best but I know it isn't really IYSWIM?

My car was from an auction as well. However, it is probably only worth going if you know a friendly car-geek/mechanic who can help you make a wise choice.
Best of luck car-hunting! xPlease call me 'Pickle'
