Well, the snow doesn't stop fighting going on:

Interestingly, it is the second time this season the blues have had crowd trouble. Not aware of any particular history between these 2 clubs though.
Anyone remember the 2 police officers in the states who pulled their guns on the crowd having a snowball fight?

Organized crime gangs are getting into this to increase their own profits.
Some interesting stats in this article - shoplifting up 20%, costing £5bn, other crime types falling, £7500 worth can be nicked in 4 minutes (:eek:must have big sleeves on their coat), daily stealing value of £100k.
I recall starting university, & speaking with a local ne'erdowell & complaining about the price of the books required. They told me to return the next day with a list, & they'd get the shoplifters onto it, seeing as I was a mate & all . Said they'd charge me £1or2 per book.
(BTW didn't go ahead with it, despite being sorely tempted. Books should be shared, not stolen.)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I see the guardian is circulating that specific "personal" crimes are on the increase, & seem to be focussed where the BNP has a foothold/local fan base.

Erm, David Cameron kinda agrees with some of this, I think...

There appears to be something of a face off between the english defence league, & the antu fascist movement. They're following each other around the country doing opposing marches. Seems to me as well that the EDL are trying to choose areas where there presence is more likely than not to recieve a reaction.

There appears to be ongoing arrests following these 2 groups around. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Looks like someone was actually trying to stir it all up prior to the marches.

Apparently the graffitti was noticed early in the day, & it was cleaned up/hidden prior to being seen by all & sundry.
Could've been quite inflammatory.
Quite clearly a personal attack designed to provoke...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Good thread, lemonjelly!
If you want to look at the social impact of the recession, there's a report on the BBC website which highlights the rise in severe child poverty in the UK (can't post the link as I'm new).
There's a clip of a single mother in London who's too ashamed to use her food vouchers because it reminds her how poor she is. Incredibly sad.0 -
You mean this one clever1?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8479364.stm
Read it already. It relates a lot to the work I do in real life.
Cild poverty is an interesting concept. There will always be those who argue that relativism means there will always be some in poverty.
My bigger issue with child poverty is that a lot of children will remain in poverty as it benefits their parents for them to do so.
In example, I work in a college. It is amazing how many parents come in with their kids to open days. Not out of concern for their childrens education, but because they want the lowdown on how their benefits will be affected, & how much EM the kids get. I see a lot of kids who's parens take the EMA off the kids for their own use.
Social stigma around vouchers isn't too new - we had the same issues when asylum seekers were/in some cases still are issued vouchers. After all, you can't shop around, they're only accepted in specific places...
