I think tesuhoha has a very valid point, too - it all sounds very feasible that this is the way it happened (I'm guessing that you probably weren't the first girlfriend that Pete had in 40+ years, but that your predecessors didn't "rock the boat" so his parents had no reason to fear you...no reason to fear that you would shake up the status quo and threaten their very comfortable lifestyle. Lucky for Pete that you did - what horrible parents that they might prefer him to remain single and without a life partner just so that they could live their "ideal" lifestyle...!!).

Please don't take Spendalot's words to heart - I replied to him/her pretty quickly (maybe too quickly! ) and have since been telling myself that one of the problems of these message boards is that we cannot gauge the intonation of what people are trying to say - it sounds quite accusatory, but perhaps is not meant as harshly as it seems...

    At least...I hope not!!

There you go - being a very slow typist, in the time it has taken me to type my reply, SouthernScouser has completely hit the nail on the head with his furry, manky strawberry thing... :p

Boy, I really wish we still had that thanks button, Martin!! ;)

I tell you what you could do to make some money; you could write a book about all this. Judging from the response on this thread, people would buy it. You seem to have a way with words and are able to tell a good story, I think it would sell. You'd have to put down a lot more of the gory details and of how much this has all cost you and how its ruined your life. I'm not joking and it would at least give you a project to work on.

There are some days (admittedly, like today) when I feel the last thing I'm going to do, literally, is play Russian Roulette with a fully-loaded machine gun. If I did that, it truly would be the last thing I did.

Then there are other days when (hopefully, like tomorrow) I feel like the last thing I'm going to do is live a full and happy life.

We all have some regrets in life. I have a few, and I'm sure we all have them. But I can honestly and truthfully say with my hand on my somewhat pounding heart, that most of my regrets aren't money-related. As I've said, I know I could have really done without that new microwave/pair of jeans/bottle of shampoo, but who doesnt go absolutely nuts once in a while and buy themselves a bottle of shampoo?

My regrets in life are that I never had any children. That I didnt do more charity work when I was well enough to do it. That I wasnt as close to my father as I should have been. Things like that.

And although I really do sometimes feel like playing Russian Roulette, the one thing I can say with all honesty is that the amount of financial debt that Pete and I are in, is about 95% not our fault.

This doesnt mean I seek sympathy or anything like that. But what I am really appreciating here is the help you are all giving me.

Its simply invaluable. I cant state it more clearly.

I would imagine that about 99% of the people who use this site are in some sort of financial difficulty. That amounts to one hell of a lot of unhappy people.

And my honest belief is that no matter who is to blame, what is to blame, why we are in debt...the only thing that truly matters is how we get the bloody hell out of debt. And from what I can tell from this forum, I believe we are all here for each other, because we all have that goal in common. From what I have seen, the thing that is clear to me is that although we are all from different walks of life, with different background, people are generally good. People generally care, and people generally need people.

Again, I dont know why I have said all of this. Im having another one of those nights, perhaps.

But when you are in financial doo-doo, blame doesnt need to be attributed between us. The only way forward is 'solution'. And friendship, too.
  • Hi just wanted to say hi and wish you both the best.
Have been following this thread since last night and am amazed that you have got this far without bumping someone on the head (very hard!!)

When you said you gave your only pound coin away I cried. However, dont give computers for schools or anyone else for that matter (unless starving and destitute) any more of your money!!! Your need is much greater at the moment!!!

You and your Pete sound like lovely people. I hope you find a solution to your problems very soon. Have a good look at your contract with the in-laws-from-hell. Were there any rules they had to abide by in order to live there rent free? Have they broken any of these rules? In which case you may have grounds to declare the contract void. There is such a lot of good advice from very clever people on this forum that have "been there, done that, bought a million bloody t-shirts" I am sure you will find a way out of this situation.

Just keep posting and know that we are all on your side
