Firstly I wouldnt be selling any gold coins as scrap. You'll get a better price on Ebay for them.
Secondly if you're selling as scrap it doesnt really matter if the stuff is a hoi poloi name as it will be melted down regardless, you might get a better price on Ebay.
Most of the High street Gold buyers know nothing about Gold at all. That was proven when, as a test I took several Grammes of Welsh gold in to one of them. Firstly they didnt even realise it was gold as it was smelted into a tight ball, secondly they didnt even know (or care) that Welsh Gold brings a high premium.
I'm a Gold Panner by the way :)

I sent 73 grams of gold to Gold Refiners. They offered me just over £200 what a joke. This I can get £850 for and even on a market in Loughborough today I was offered £10 a gram £730. These company's are ripping of people with stupid offers.
  • Whatever you do, do not try this company. I sent a 22ct half gold sovereign and they offered £20 for it!! (I had already been offered over a hundred pounds for it from a different source) When I laughed at this and said no, send it back, I was put on hold while they tried their "sister web-based" company. The operator came back and offered £92. I asked how the prices could be so vastly differently and was told that Post Gold For Cash are a TV based company and have very high advertising costs and overheads and therefore the prices offered reflect this - what a complete and utter rip-off! I said I would like my gold back - the operator was quite rude and kept talking over me, especially when I said that the company was completely mis-leading people and none of this was on the web-site. A message for Anne Diamond - you should be ashamed to have your name attached to this company!
  • I received a letter and pre-paid envelope in the post and decided to send 3 items of jewellery to these people. I completed the form, used their own registered next day delivery envelope and this was taken from the office I work at by the royal mail collection driver. I had heard nothing after a week and contacted post gold for cash via their website. Apparently if I did not have a post office proof of postage there is nothing they can do although they did say they would look in their 'lost property.'
It seems that if you do not get this proof of postage then they will not admit receiving your items and are very lax in even caring. I sent three items and was hoping to get maybe about £70-£80 to help with a recent car repair, instead I got nothing and this company isn't bothered. I find it hard to believe this item has gone astray but I am sure if I speak to the postman at our office and see if he can track it they will miraculously locate my package.
BEWARE! I think they will scam you given half the chance! Don't be tempted by the envelope as I was, just go to a few shops on the High St and get the best price for you!
