Most expensive vet bill and why

  • £200, my cat had UTI and was on deaths door. The only reason the cost was so low because they only kept him in one night and didn't need to operate. They felt he would recover better at home due to him being overly cautious around strangers.

I have now renewed the insurance I had canceled before this happened. Lesson learned!!

We got a dog a few weeks ago from the RSPCA who they said had a bit of a limp because of osteoarthritis....our vet refered us to a specialist who has told us she has a ruptured cruciate ligament and luxating patella, the surgery is going to be a couple of quid short of £2200 and yeah, you guessed it....pre-existing condition = no insurance cover!

I think you should go back to the RSPCA and tell them the diagnosis - it is not really fair that you should adopt a dog from them and within a few weeks be looking at a vets bill like that when the condition was clearly present before you got him.

Incidentally op, we used to have a cat called Ambrose - he was ginger and white and was totally gorgeous. He used to sleep around my neck (even while I hoovered.)

Our highest bill was for our cat who decided to go and play on a main road. Predictably she got hit by a car and idiot who was driving didnt bother to stop!! We thought we had lost her until we received a phone call from a vets two days later "we have good news - we've got your cat, the bad news - you owe us £600!". Shes worth every penny though.
Now we're lucky if she goes to the end of the garden - she certainly learnt her lesson!

£1500 for a operation to open my cocker spaniel's stomach and intestine, and to keep him in hospital for six days, after he swallowed a washing-up sponge. I was just on the verge of cancelling the insurance because the premium had gone up so much - thankfully I hadn't got round to it.

Mine was 190.00 when my mare had colic. Luckily she didnt go in for surgery due to her age but that did include 3 visits, blood tests, stomach pump, medication and a sample of stomach fluid was tested as well. It amazes me how relatively cheap horse vet bills are compared to small animals x x

  • at what point do i stop though?

when i was a kid the vet said there was nothing else could be done and that was it..

now there is so much that can be done and i have gone over £3000 on insurance but i have got this far with the old chap - at what point do i stop?

  • @ princess. personally I would take the view that I would stop when the animal says it has had enough. Medicine is a marvellous thing, but there are side effects, which can outway the benefits. *ignoring cost*

    Difficult choice indeed x

  • Just to add, how important it is to realise that vet bills soon mount up to the £3000 mark. please ensure your insurance meets this criteria, they soon mount up.

  • £2000+ for a cat with a cancerous tumour on her tail - 8 weeks of antibiotics before referral - op to remove her tail (she only had a 2 inch tail anyway hence the referral) and 2 more weeks of antibiotics. All covered by insurance.
