To alter the sizing of pics you need to change it wherever it is stored (photobucket or whatever) I think...

anyway, the total bill over the 19 months from diagnosis came to around £12,000 (initial explorations, chemo, ongoing care, periodic scans etc). our vet of course put insurance claims in as he went along.

recently i had a bill for £800, which was for a heart scan, full blood analysis and a tooth extraction for another cat.

btw - i happen to use one of the most expensive vets in the country i believe! (central london, desirable postcode, but i live in the less desirable bit and he is my closest vet, and he and his staff are also brilliant)

thank heavens for good pet insurance.

Yep, I do believe you when you say you use one of the most expensive vets...:eek::eek:

My story seems a bit paltry in comparison. My little Dylan - a boy cat - had big constipation issues, eventually being diagnosed with megacolon. The vet was put in a terrible position because the medicine he wanted to prescribe was pulled from the market a few years ago. It's actually a human medicine but there were unwanted serious side effects in humans and so it disappeared from the UK/Ireland totally. He asked me to consider either putting Dylan to sleep or taking him to a specialist in Dublin for removal of his colon. I bought a little time by putting Dylan onto Lactulose, syringed into his mouth - and he hated it and ran away from me when he saw me going to where the bottle was kept. I also tried a homeopathic veterinary remedy. The big saviour was from the States via Yahoo groups where I found a bunch of people going through the same thing. They were able to suggest a particular medicine - not available anywhere in Europe, but over the counter in USA - and I obtained that and it has been working ever since and Dylan has been very well. From first symptoms to getting the magic medicine poor Dylan had one Sunday night emergency vet visit, one operation and five enemas and a colonic irrigation, and was pilled and syringed with a multitude of medicines. In all it cost me around £900... I lived on beans and toast for a while as I was out of work for a while during these dramatics and so had no income.

He's worth every penny though. This morning he hopped into bed beside me and went to sleep with his body under the duvet and his wee head on the pillow.

highest vets bill for my dog wasn't that much, just to have a tooth removed, we've been lucky so far!

medders your dog is almost exactly the same as mine! only difference is mine has bigger ears. I've seen a few that look similar, I guess it must be what happens when you cross quite a few common breeds together.

Apparantly hes shot someone elses not that long ago near me and it wasnt so lucky.. i've told him if he shoots near my land again or if any of my cats come back from that direction with any ailment at all im going over there with my dads shotgun lol makes me so angry
Theres 2 types of horse owner, a person who owns a horse and a horsey person ;)
  • well mine is £3000 and still ongoing . as he is an older cat the insurance only goes up to £3000 and even then i still have to pay 20% so he has cost me £600 + so far.... this was for thickening of the bowel which we thought was cancer - two operations and about a month in the vets and he is home but still on loads of medication and only allowed to eat salmon. people think i am crazy spending this much on a cat but he is such a lovely old boy and he is so glad to be home. he is improving all the time but still not putting much weight on and is still on chemo drugs

during the same time that the old boy was in and out of the vets the 18month old got ill and his bill was over £1000 this was for numerous x-rays and scans because he went all 'stiff' and painful so we thought he had broken his back - turned out he had salmonella poisoning which when it gets really bad causes enourmous pain in the joints as well as sickness etc.

thankfully i took out insurance earlier in the year - if it wasn't for the insurance then neither of my boys would be here now
it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:
  • We got a dog a few weeks ago from the RSPCA who they said had a bit of a limp because of osteoarthritis....our vet refered us to a specialist who has told us she has a ruptured cruciate ligament and luxating patella, the surgery is going to be a couple of quid short of £2200 and yeah, you guessed it....pre-existing condition = no insurance cover!

My doggie (now passed away) had emergency surgery on a canceous tumour near his bum, that was about £800 and sadly didnt work, so further treatment was needed. At the same time as this was oing on he also managed to tear his cruciate ligament. We didnt have the surgery on this, as by this point the cancer had sadly spread, so for both conditions it became at least weekly vets visits, lots of painkillers and anti-inflamatorys. We decded on pallative care and just kept him happy all the time we could.

The final cost of the last 6 months of his life was well into £3000, and this was just the vets bills, he also needed chicken and rice everyday and of course lots of treats!
