when my cat became ill, she had to stay at the vets for almost two weeks and had some exploratory procedures done, including a full operation to open up her tummy. turns out she had stomach cancer, she was fairly young (10) so we decided to try chemo to see if she could handle it...and she could, very well in fact, the only side effects she suffered was a loss of her whiskers and occasional acid-reflux and occasional constipation. if she had not handled it then we would have stopped the treatment immediately.

anyway, the total bill over the 19 months from diagnosis came to around £12,000 (initial explorations, chemo, ongoing care, periodic scans etc). our vet of course put insurance claims in as he went along.

recently i had a bill for £800, which was for a heart scan, full blood analysis and a tooth extraction for another cat.

btw - i happen to use one of the most expensive vets in the country i believe! (central london, desirable postcode, but i live in the less desirable bit and he is my closest vet, and he and his staff are also brilliant)

thank heavens for good pet insurance.

£211.65 for Tess the Cat for a dental & one extraction & £443.98 for Chaya (Dog) for a Spay & Tumour removal double op
  • It cost about £250 for our cat's dental, possibly more as he had to stay on drip 24 hours before the op to reduce the risk as he was very old had kidney failure he also had blood tests before the op and 1 week later which bumped up the cost more.

£101 to find out kitten Cleo was teething (I though she had swallowed something) £100 emergency call out on easter bank holiday after hours, £1 for painkilling injection.
Felt a total idiot but worth every penny as the injection made her feel better straight away.

Over £1000 in one day for tests with a specialist for mutt who keeps getting repeated urine infections. Plus several hundreds for the vet's visits leading to the referral. (Thank god for credit cards.)
Luckily no operations were required, just a change of medication, otherwise it would have been an awful lot more.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Its intresting to here other peoples experiences! i thought i was the only one that ended up with large vet bills! last one i had also was evil man accros the road shot my cat! straight into her leg, just missed her vital organs. had her leg amputated, cost about £400 but his insurance paid out thankfully! she still has small shards of bullet all round her body, the vet said they are sitting in there not doing any harm :) x

your neigbour needs shooting himself! why did he shoot your cat? what a !!!!!! i had a cat that came home with an air gun pellet lodged between his skin and skull...poor little thing ended up getting a very bad abcess, despite us spotting the bullet early.

did your neighbour get charged or anything?
  • My biggest bill was in June this year when my boy couldn't urinate. Initial vet visit was £115. Then he was referred to a specialist who operated on him but unfortunately couldn't save him, he had prostate cancer. Total for that was £1200. Had to have him put to sleep. Am still missing him very much.

    Here's a pic of him jtkiuh_th.jpg

  • So far this year my baby has cost a few pounds short of £4,000 a combination of diabetes and a lump that needed removing. Thank God for insurance but still hitting the pocket hard as she is getting on now so I have to pay a percentage contribution.
Here she is shortly after getting home from her operation looking like she has downed a bottle of vodka!
All better now though although still bald!
