I found this thread by chance! I had two suspicious entries on my CREDIT CARD statement a couple of months ago. Both were £30 in value - one was for Tesco Mobile top-up and the other was O2 Prepay top up. I didn't realise the problem was so widespread. My CC company sent me dispute forms which I have yet to action - based on this thread, I will be doing it tomorrow.
Well at least I now know I am not alone.
I was contacted last week by my CC company about unusual transactions on my card. Mainly just £1 items going through. So checked which ones I didn't recognise - included T-mobile.
They were very good (think my shopping pattern must be very obvious) canceled the 'odd' ones, canceled my card and sent out a new one.
No idea how they got my details, I'm normally very careful who I deal with.

Anyone thought of contacting Watchdog over this? Im sending them a link to this thread.

The horrifying thing is the police dont seem interested at all. When I was done I asked the bank to let me know the outcome as they had got a phone from O2 and they said they would - Ive heard nothing. I think they just wipe it off.

O2 seems to be a big culprit in this scamming too. Its time they tightened their security.

  • i did contact o2 last night when i first found out they told me to get intouch with bank as they couldnt do anything until bank contacted them and will then investigate the fraud
  • also emailed 02 here is reply

Thank you for your email and I'm sorry that two payments of £15 each transaction has appeared on your statement and you're not an O2 customer.

I can tell you, that the quickest resolution for yourself is to contact your bank to request them to perform an indemnity claim. This is an industry agreed process where the customer is refunded within 5 working days by the bank. Your bank will then contact us to claim the money back and our specialised team will then investigate this issue.

xxxxxx I'm sorry that this has happened and although we do try to put as many security processes in to place as we can, we're aware that this can happen from time to time and it is beyond our control.

Thank you for taking the time to email us and have a nice day, if I can help with anything else please reply to my email.

If you should have any further questions, please visit our online Help Centre at:

Don't forget, for us to answer your query faster, please provide your mobile number, two numbers that you call or send text messages to regularly and the date, amount and method of your last Top-Up, every time you email us.

    Kind regards
    xxxxxx

Luis - link: The more people who contact them, the more likely they are to look into it.

O2 don't chase up the person who owns the phone the top up went onto, occasionally they will block the sim, but thats it.

Mobile top up is quite a common fraud as it is one of the simplest.
  • Same thing happened to me. Didn't notice until statement arrived though, 2 weeks afterwards.

Just out of interest is there anyone that has had this scam that has never used online shopping?

I'm a bit worried about the inference that your address is needed to top up on 02.
