I didn't say it doesn't kill, what I said was anything has the capacity to kill anyone, peanuts can kill people, but are they banned? Alchohol can kill people, and that's not been banned. Some things kill some people, but not all people, sure smoking has probably contributed to the death of some people but not everyone that has died of cancer died because of smoking. Cancer can be caused by many different factors.

I do not have an ability to understand facts, I understand them very well, I use the facts to makes a concious decision on how I want to live my life. As I said previously, I am sick of being told what is good for me and what isn't depending on this week's facts, which reminds me, isn't it alcohol that is now said to cause cancer? I am perfectly capable of deciding what direction I want to take with my life, until they ban free will then that is the way I intend on staying.

The thing about smoking is that there are zero health benefits. Alcohol, peanuts even vehicles (think fire engines, ambulances) have health benefits. And that's why I don't understand why people smoke.

I think most people will interpret:
if it is indeed true that smoking kills you earlier

    and now:
sure smoking has probably contributed to the death of some people

as denial of the fact that smoking kills.

I agree with you that in an age where we're bombarded with health scares every 5 minutes, that it can be hard to filter out what to do for the best. However, we're not talking about this week's facts, we're talking about the cumulative evidence of over 100 years of medical research into the effects of smoking.

What I find interesting about SOME (but probably most) smokers is that they have so little regard or consideration for others.

It isn't just their polluting smoke and smell, it's their litter too.

Take a good look at roadside litter and you'll see that the vast majority of it is made up of (in no particular order) cigarette butts and packaging, crisp packets, drinks cans and fast food debris.

But what I think is very telling is that you'll find many of these items together, which indicates that the culprits' lifestyle incorporates most of these things - which regrettably is a very obvious indicator of the standard or quality of these people.

I'm going to avoid calling them all scum, because that can't be the case as there must be the odd rare smoker that carefully puts out their butt, places it in the finished packet, keeps it within their car / pocket / whatever and then responsibly disposes of it within their normal garbage back at home.... its just that I haven't seen one myself yet.

Apart from being a socially responsible person that actually clears up others' litter in the lanes near my house, I'm also a very switched on driver and am very aware of poor drivers - in particular those that seem unable to maintain steady speeds and are otherwise erratic.
Very often the cause is the mobile user (you look next time a vehicle suddenly slows - I'll lay odds they're using a mobile), but I've also been conducting my own ad hoc survey on the motorways and it is interesting that erratic driving is so very often committed by a smoker.

Personally I believe that smoking contributes to the "f... you, Jack, I'm alright" mentality that pervades the more anti-social "members" of society - which regrettably is also evident amongst some of the previous posters on here....

There, that's my 2p worth - I feel better now and await the (rather noxious, particulate-laden) broadside with relish! :hello:

Most annoying thing I see is parents smoking in their car with children in the back seat. Should be a criminal offence imo as it shows they just don't give a f**k about them.

My mam smoked around me when i was a child. she smoked when she was pregnant in fact. But I have the most loving mam in the world who does in fact give a f**k about me.

She has an addiction to cigarettes she's not a child abuser.

Thank you. This is what I've been trying to say to marleyboy. You've said it much more succinctly.

My opinions as well, were are these miserable non smokers? what do they do at night? When the ban came into force you heard them saying that they would be glad to have a drink in a smoke free pub etc. But with pubs closing at the rate that they are they had better hurry up. Perhaps they are attending seminars on what to ban next.;)
