Yo, jannienew, I gotta newsflash for ya - I don't have to justify anything I do or say, especially not on the internet!
Did you not see the [/sarcasm] bit at the end? I am mocking the OP, not because he doesn't like smokers, but because he appears to have forgotten that "smokers" are actually a diverse group. He seems to think of smokers as just one organism with blah million heads and half a lung. As a smoker, I am aware that secondhand smoke smells like bum, so I try not to inflict it on other people. One smoker, or even several smokers, being inconsiderate doesn't mean we all are!

I wasn't just commenting on your post, and yes i did see the sarcasm comment! You don't have to justify your habit to people on the internet, but so many smokers seem to be doing just that. Comparing their addiction to traffic fumes (they might change their minds if their addiction makes them ill and they need an ambulance!) I'm glad that your not an inconsiderate smoker, i have no problems with smokers, as long as i don't have to breathe it in. My main pet hate and it should be illegal, is people smoking in cars with kids and pregant women who smoke, i see cases like this everyday and it disgusts me.

What worries me is all this "they" stuff. Once again, smokers do not share a hive mind. We are not members of an elite club. We do not have a secret handshake . We are not forming our own private army to destroy all the non-smokers of the world*.The only thing we have in common is an addiction. Saying "they" all the time just reinforces this idea that there's two sides to the world, a smoking side and a non-smoking side.

I've yet to find someone who says "I don't mean to be rude, but-" and doesn't then use that as an excuse to be rude. Of course I'm sure you are in fact a lovely person, but you should have put those two sentences further apart;)

Newscaster - ...army appears to have stalled prematurely. And, yes, looking through the pall of smoke hanging over England we can just make out the smoker's natural enemy - the hill.

@hartcjhart - That's how statistics work. If you notice that a statistically significant percentage of people who get lung cancer are also smokers, you have two options - either smoking increases the chance that they will get cancer, or having cancer increases the chance that someone will smoke. You can't say "Smoking gives you cancer" because cancer isn't a disease like the 'flu. Cancer is the result of damage to your DNA. Your body's cells can repair damage to your DNA, but sometimes the repair is messy, and sometimes the damage is too great to repair. Damage accumulates, too, which is why you're more likely to get cancer when you're older. We can say for certain that smoking damages your DNA, and we know that DNA damage causes cancer.

Smoking is bad i know that, but i do still smoke. Alot less than i did, im more of a social smoker and dont have a social life! So dont smoke alot anymore. Hopefully one day i will kick the habbit properly.

But im sure once that i read the government earns over 8 billion a year from taxes on fags and it actully cost the government 3 billion on smoking related deseases??

CAN I JUST SAY I THINK I READ THIS - I may be wrong. Can anyone find figures for 08 as i do think this is very interesting.

Also they say they dont market towards the young, but yet look at the B&H silver packets with there slidy sides and space to write messages. This to me is marketing towards youngters. And the goverment allow this. Why? Is it so they can make more money?

As i said i dont really know anything really, the whole thing just seems mad. I always said they ban smoking from public places, why not just ban it compleatly??

I wouldn't say something enclosed on the inside of a packet can be classed as marketing tbh

Smokers DO know the risks, yet still take them, and if it isn't marketed, then how is it sold? obviously their is a significantly BIG marketing product for the Government to justify its availability. Because like it or not, it still remains available, unlike heroin or cocaine (which Ironically is STILL available to the addicts).

A vegan could argue their rights not to smell meat and that technically, they are being forced to eat it by the smell of a burger bar, and who are we to dismiss them. Cyclists could argue their rights not to breathe in exhausts fumes.

Whilst cigarettes sell, just like alcohol and petrol, their will always be a reason to use them, and at a location considered to be acceptable levels.

Smokers have rights too, they have the right to buy it, surely they have the right to be able to use it. They no longer have the right to do it indoors, on train platforms or local transport. I can still drink alcohol on a train.

Big Cities have lots of smokers, As many people smoking at any one time, as their are cars trundling through the City at rush hour, they smoke where its acceptable. For the record I don't smoke.

    loving this thread lol!!!
I am an ex social smoker and used to really enjoy a ciggie with a drink-I stopped smoking when I fell pregnant and just didn't enjoy it after that (it used to make my hangover worse too, on the rare occasions I got out) I am not anti smoking, each to there own at the end of the day but I really dislike the smell of smoke now and dont like it when it blows in my face-I just dont think I can be so hypocritcal to say something when I probably used to do the same!!!

The one big thing that I detest are people smoking around children, especially in cars, or even worse pregnant women smoking,it really pi**es me off! Its all very well saying "you cant tell me what to do, it's my body" fair enough but surely they shouldn't be so selfish as to pass on the many poisons to their precious unborn child (this also goes for women who take drugs or drink while pregnant).

I remember when I was as school a boy in my class used to come in absolutely stinking of stale smoke-obviously from one or both of his parents, i used to feel so sorry for him as other people would comment on it and he was clearly embarassed, it wasn't his fault though, just his parents!

Like I said if you want to smoke then fine I dont have a problem with it and most people enjoy a fag but just not around children!

i have read this thread with interest, but I refuse to feel guilty about my smoking. I have smoked since I was 7 years old, so almost 50 years, except for a few times when I have quit but restarted. It's all about choice, and I choose to smoke because I enjoy it. I don't smoke in other people's houses, unless I am invited to, and I try to be considerate to others. I don't smoke in shop doorways, etc., but I smoke where it's allowed, e.g. outdoors. When I am smoking outdoors it will be pretty obvious, so those who don't wish to smell the smoke, or me, can stay the hell away from me. It doesn't take many more steps to walk around me. I do know that the smell of tobacco smoke is unpleasant to the non smoker, but much more unpleasant is the smell of unwashed bodies, now that should be banned! How much does soap and water cost?
BTW, the government can increase taxes on tobacco as much as they like, I don't buy my ciggies in the UK, I just nip to Belgium when I need some more.

Even in this thread, we've met at least two who not only are unaware of the risks, but actually deny they exist!

Hitler was against smoking but had methods similar to what you describe.

Oh please.... you are being ridiculous. In no way was I describing "Hitlers" antics and you know it! The methods he used was torture which let to the innocent deaths of thousands...

If you smoke your choice... and all your friends smoke then fine so go and smoke together away from innocent people who feel ill by it...
