I`m so sorry. I feel your pain. Last Wed we had our beautiful boy Willow pts. He was 18 and poorly but he was the best baby ever. I will never get over my boy. I hate sitting here on the settee without him. I can still smell him. Your Ziggy (great name) knew he was loved. Thats so important. Thinking about you. x

Sorry to hear this - poor little thing. :(

I still miss my Spook, she was put to sleep in June at the age of 13. People on here were very kind and it helped a lot.

    Hope you feel better soon.

Reading your post reminded me of losing my beloved cat Pika, she was my son's cat and when he left for university I think Pika and I both suffered from "empty nest syndrome" . She would follow me everywhere and I would speak to her to fill the emptiness in my home and heart. I could never have imagined being so close to any animal.

One day she went out and didn't come back, later we found out that she had been knocked down and had died instantly, she is now buried in our garden. The pain I felt was as strong as that of losing a family member, I was totally devastated.

Six months later after much persuasion by my family I got another cat (Bella) with the intention of not getting too close so that I could never be that hurt again. But slowly, surely, Bella has found her way into my heart and I have now had her more than 5 years.

She will never be Pika but I love her just the same.

    So sorry for your loss.

  • Somerset, I am ever so sorry about Ziggy, he sounds very special. I didn't realise how much I loved my old dog till she died either - I was a mess, and surprised at the emotion that I felt... but take it as you find it, whatever you feel is ok... there is a line I heard about 'It's just a dog or cat' - it would be like saying 'just a sunset' or 'just a friend' - animals are important - they develop real and meaningful relationships with us, although we are different species and we enrich each others lives.

It sounds like he had a lovely life, and please remember that although to us it seems brief, animals live in the moment, and so quality of life is important, rather than quantity to them.

It sounds like he lived the life of freedom and exploration which is most natural and fulfilling for a cat. Whenever you let them out there is a risk of course, my friend's lovely tabby was killed outside his front door on a weekday lunchtime, but they get so much pleasure from exploring that I think if you asked a cat they would take the risk and have the fun!

Just to say how sorry I am to hear about the loss of your cat. Its an awful thing to happen particularly because she was so young and they take over our lives in ways we don"t expect!!!

I got up 3 times during the night to call one of my cats in from the garden because I worry so much about them being out at night!!!!. I wouldn"t care but the little monkey knows what she"s doing because she came up to the door when I called her the first time and then turned tail and ran off back down the garden!!! Its like having a teenager and worrying when they stay out all night partying!!! Can"t believe that I"ll happily go out into the garden at 3am looking in the hedges for her and shouting for her to come in but, then again I can"t sleep properly if she isn"t in the house!!!!
loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!

So sorry to hear of your loss Somerset. I can totally understand your pain as although the curcumstances were different I lost my baby girl, Pip, this February to cancer. She was 15 and we had to have her PTS. It's the worst experience of my life and I cried for days before knowing it was coming and for days after. (Im actually filling up now typing this - how ridiculous is that?).

Reflecting on it now I know it was the right thing for her as I wouldn't want her to suffer but I think of her every day. I have some lovely photos of her too. I know what you mean about putting her tray and bowls away. That crushed me at the time.

Its been 6 months and I miss her. I may at some stage chose to give another cat a home but Pippy will never be replaced and never forgotton.

Much love to you. RIP Ziggy. xx

I really feel for you Somerset.

I posted on here when I lost my old boy in February this year and I was overwhelmed and touched by all the kind messages I received from fellow forum members. It really helped to know that there were people out there generous enough to share in my grief and also to understand it.

I hope you derive some comfort from this too.

    Take care.

Thinking about you. It's awful to lose a pet because they are another member of your family.
Take care. Have a hug from me.
