  • I found a few fleas on one cat, but none on the other cat, but gave both a spot on treatment today. Should i leave it a couple of days before i use indorex on our home? The cat who i saw fleas on likes to sleep with my daughters cuddly toys, can i spray all of them, will they still be safe to play with, and the other day he sneaked into their wardrobe, do i need to wash all thier clothes for potential eggs?
I realy dont like using chemicals, but i hate fleas!

hampshirebabe,I wouldn't worry too much about the toys, gather them together to avoid spraying them when you do the floor or where ever they where placed, with regards to clothes I didn't bother washing them but if it's not too time consuming you may want to just to be on the safe side.
you should use the spray asap and then hoover for a few days

Fleas have and can, become immune to Frontline so its important to vary your flea killing products. Fleas are becoming immune to many pesticides as are rats and cockroaches to poisons. These creatures are tough and adaptable and will learn to breed immune off spring to many pesticides, manufacturers need to come up with other methods or use alternative methods.

I know this thread is old , but i wanted to add that frontline hasn't worked on my cats either , im trying advantage this time it costs me though as i have a small and large cat so the dosages are different .

To treat the house i just sprinkle table salt on the carpets and suite and it dries the fleas and the eggs out the lot , then after a few days i hoover it up and sprinkle salt again ..

My cats have started going out so i think this is why they have got fleas but frontline used to work and it can't be that my cats are immune to or should i say the fleas as my two are only a year old .
  • thought i would share a response from frontline

    Dear Ms Thomas,

Thank you for completing the questionnaire and returning it. Based on the information that you have provided, we have identified factors that may be playing a role in the infestation that you are currently experiencing and have provided some specific information and advice as to how best to resolve this.

It is important to note that FRONTLINE® Spot On is not a repellent and so will not stop fleas from jumping onto your cats and dogs after they have been treated. There is no product that will stop fleas jumping onto a host; this means that it is normal to see fleas on a treated pet and this is not an indication of product failure. FRONTLINE Spot On requires 24 hours of contact to kill each new flea that jumps on. Each time your pet passes through an area that is infested with flea pupae, adult fleas will hatch out and jump on and you will see these fleas on them for up to 24 hours after each exposure. Once a flea has jumped onto a treated pet from the environment, it will then be killed within 24 hours before it has time to lay eggs that would then be shed into your home potentially leading to a home infestation. The fleas that are seen on a correctly treated pet, are likely to be fleas that have jumped on in the past 24 hours and have not yet had adequate time in contact with the product to be killed.

The flea life cycle is such that the fleas that are seen on a pet are only a small proportion of the total flea population. 95% of the problem exists in the pet’s environment as flea eggs, larvae and pupae. One flea can lay up to 50 eggs in a day or 1500 in a lifetime. These eggs are not sticky and are shed from the host’s fur into the home and garden. These eggs then hatch into larvae, which actively crawl away from light. Once the larvae have found a suitable hiding place i.e. around skirting boards, within pavement cracks etc, they will then develop a cocoon, inside which the new flea develops. This life-stage is known as the flea pupa and can survive in the environment for many months. The pupae will hatch out when conditions are optimum; they favour hot and humid weather. They will also respond to vibrations as this signifies a host, and will hatch out and jump onto a new pet within seconds of them walking past.

For effective flea control, all the animals in the household and the environmental flea burden (eggs and larvae) must be treated with appropriate products at regular intervals throughout the year. If pets are not treated at the correct intervals throughout the year, then once the product has been depleted, fleas that jump on to your pets will survive and be bought into the home, resulting in an infestation developing. FRONTLINE Spot On cat must be applied at maximum treatment intervals of 5 weeks, and FRONTLINE spot on dog must be applied at maximum treatment interval of 8 weeks, in order to prevent a home infestation from developing.

From the information you have provided, it seems that you may currently be experiencing a home infestation, as fleas will not normally jump off their preferred animal host onto a person. Typically people will be bitten by fleas around their ankles and feet when new adult fleas are emerging from their pupae within the home environment. Because of the length of time that flea pupae can survive before hatching (up to a year), the adult fleas that are currently hatching out and jumping on your pets may have been laid many months ago. Depending on how many pupae are present, a flea infestation can take from 3 months up to more than 6 months to resolve. The treated pets must be allowed access to all areas of the home to ensure that they can act as ‘living vacuum cleaners’ by causing the pupae to hatch and the adult fleas to jump onto them, rather than people in the home.

It is advisable to treat your home with an environmental spray that contains an Insect Growth Regulator to help kill adults, eggs and larvae already present in the home your veterinary surgeon can advise you on suitable products to use. Unfortunately there is no insecticidal product available that will kill flea pupae; so while home sprays that contain an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) will help to treat the eggs and larvae present in the home and are an important part of flea control, the pupae in their cocoons will not be killed and will still hatch out within seconds when a host walks past. This means that if a home infestation does become established it can take several treatments (sometimes 3 or 4) of all pets in the household every 4 weeks alongside environmental control to eradicate it.

Home infestations are often isolated to areas where a pet spends most of their time; i.e. their bedding, a sofa, the bedrooms etc. Therefore when using a home spray, it is important to consider where your pet spends their time, and concentrate on those areas.

Some additional steps that can be taken to help resolve a home flea infestation more quickly are:

-although we are sure you hoover regularly, vacuuming more often than usual can encourage flea pupae to hatch more quickly, as the vibrations produced when vacuuming signifies a possible host.
-ensure the house is warm and humid (warmth and humidity are stimuli which encourage the pupae to hatch). Turning on radiators and putting a wet towel over them can create the appropriate environment.
-when cleaning the home, pay particular attention not only to where your pets spend a lot of their time but also to dark corners and cracks between floorboards, under sofas etc (flea larvae actively crawl away from sources of light).
-regularly wash your pets’ bedding, preferably at greater than 60 degrees Celsius for at least 10 minutes.
-ensure your pets have continued access to all areas of the house; this will encourage the pupae to hatch from the environment and the newly emerged adults will then be killed after contact with the treated pet.
    - when using a home spray pay particular attention to those areas where your pet spends most of their time, as home infestations are often isolated to areas where a pet sleeps, eats etc
-ensure that the home spray used kills the flea adult, egg and larvae; your veterinary practice will be able to advise you further regarding environmental treatments.

The minimum licensed treatment interval for FRONTLINE Spot On cat and FRONTLINE spot on dog is 4 weeks. At this stage, in case there is some degree of home infestation, we would recommend that you apply the product every 4 weeks to your cats and dogs for at least the next 3 applications. Once the situation has improved, you can return to applying the product every 5 weeks for your cat and 8 weeks to your dog, throughout the year.

As a gesture of goodwill and demonstration of our faith in the product, we will be happy to provide you with a 3 pack of FRONTLINE Spot On for each of your cats and dogs. If you would like to accept this please confirm your pets details and current weights and your postal address by email and we will arrange for the product to be posted to you.

We hope that this information is useful. Flea infestations can be frustrating and difficult to treat but by regularly applying FRONTLINE and taking other appropriate steps they can be eliminated successfully. FRONTLINE Spot On is licensed as a Non Food Animal - Veterinarian, Pharmacist, Suitably Qualified Person medicine (NFA-VPS) in the UK, which means that it can be supplied by a veterinary surgeon, pharmacist or a suitably qualified person. Should you have any other queries on this matter, please contact our technical service team on 0870 6000 123, who would be happy to provide further advice.

    Kind regards,

    Veterinary Information Assistant

  • I would recommend Advocate. Frontline manufacturers will tell you their product is fully functional but in my (and my clients') experience this is not the case!

It's interesting that Frontline have a whole list of explanations as to why it's not their product that is at fault, but why is it that nobody ever comes on here saying they have problems with other well-known brands of flea treatment, it's only Frontline that cats seem to have issues with.

To be fair I bought Eliminall, because everywhere had sold out of Advantage, and it was completely useless. However I now know that it contains the same ingredient - fipronil - as Frontline.

Never heard of Eliminall, never seen it mentioned before! Like I say, never heard anybody complaining that Advantage doesn't work.
