its just like nits on kids! for years one product will be the best - then all of a sudden it wont! the ruddy fleas/nits develop a resistance to it! and all you can do is try the next product to come along!

i've just switched from frontline to advantage after finding fleas on our cat , i put advantage on on saturday and touch wood , i've not seen her scratch once , and i've not found any fleas on her either
  • I heard about frontline as well so switched to Ectoline! :) Its brilliant and cheaper as well - does exactly the same job (but better) and saves me money. I woulld highly reccomend it to all of you. Visit the Pet Medicine Company to buy it :)

Edit: Frontline doesn't make the cat's blood poisonous to fleas, it coats the cat's skin with an insecticide.

Fipronil the active ingredient in Frontline *does* goes into the blood though and is toxic to both animals and people. Indorex, Johnsons4Fleas etc contain an active ingredient called Permetherin, which is a known carcinogen and endocrine disruptor. S-methoprene can be combine with both Fipronil and Permetherin, as they are in Indoerex spray and Frontline Combo, making both chemicals even more toxic than they already are. These chemicals are being investigated by the EPA in America because there have been tens of thousands of incidents of reported pet deaths.

I cannot remember what is in Advocate, Advantage or Stronghold, off the top of my head, but tbh I have given up on chemicals. I comb my cat to keep fleas at bay, use diamotatious earth on carpets and regularly boil wash any soft furnishings if I think I have a flea problem in the house. You can also use diamotatious earth on the animal itself, but I haven't ever needed to, combing done regularly is enough. Diamotatious earth is pretty MSE as well, cheaper than Frontline and lasts forever.

You can read more about them here:

I don't mean to be preachy (sorry if I come across that way), but would not use any of these products myself, because I don't believe they are safe to use or tested properly. I hope I have explained clearly why.

Glad I found this thread, I thought I'd bought fake Frontline online as we got a batch of fleas at Christmas (I had the cat sitting on my lap with my mother-in-law who doesn't like cats next to me on the sofa, when I saw a flea wandering around in the white fur on moggy's face - oops! Fortunately she didn't see it!).

I got some spray stuff for the house and some Bob Martin's stuff for the cat and managed to clear them with about 3 applications. I think that a lot of people don't realise that you're going to have to apply the Bob Martin's stuff several times because of fleas at different stages in their life cycle being around its environment still getting back onto the cat.

Will take a look at the other options to Frontline

I read the article - has anyone actually tried feeding this to their cats? Combing for fleas sounds incredibly time consuming but I am considering other options for flea control/elimination (that can be applied on pets & home furnishings)

i've been using Frontline combo for many years and never have a problem

we have 3 outdoor cats who only ever seem to get rabbit fleas and it works a treat on them, takes a bit longer to kill them than cat and dog fleas, i normally pull them off when I see them and they are usually pretty sluggish. It also works well on ticks as they get them in summer as they are in fields with livestock.

Hi Bobbie3917 I opted for Advantage 80 for my cat you can get it from vetuk at £10.61 it no longer needs a prescription so its a lot cheaper to get online as vets are pricey, look on there site and pick which advantage suits your needs as per the weight of your cat,we haven't been bitten in our house since,we also used Indorex spray £8.77 which did a great job it was also from vetuk, advantage was recommended to us by a girl that we know that works at a vets as she uses it for her cats.
Before using Indorex I gave bedding a good wash and then hoovered house thoroughly before spraying as this agitates the flea/eggs and gets them in to the open, give your squirting boards a good spray along cracks and edge of carpet, spray under sofas, beds, when you have finished spraying leave the house for a couple of hours, the can will give comprehensive instructions.
After the first hoovering before spraying I placed my hoover in the garage and sprayed a little Indorex in the hoover bag before hoovering dead fleas at a later time and then disposing of hoover bag in an outside bin.
We had our infestation last year.
I did spray Indorex on our mattresses (above and below) as other people seem to have as I noted that my bed was the last place I was still being bitten, and after spraying that was the end of a horrible month.
    Good luck
