Worst job you have ever had??

I once had a job at uni where I had to start at 4am making sandwiches that went on to be sold at supermarkets, petrol stations etc - apart from getting up so horribly early, the owner was a total cow, and wouldn't let anyone even put the kettle on until 6.30am and the standard of the ingredients was terrible, half the stuff was either off or manky....the hygiene standards of the other people that worked there were terrible too - I still can't eat sandwiches in those plastic triangular boxes - they look all clean and sanitised but the truth really is another matter!!Some people create their own storms....then get upset when it rains!0

One particularly desperate time in my life saw me shovelling dog s!!t off the pavements in sub-zero temperatures for minimum wage.
At 5.30 in the morning.
On Christmas morning.
While that was pretty crap, I came across a homeless person asleep on the concrete in a car park. Suddenly my crap job was put into perspective as at least I was going home in a few hours to a hot turkey lunch.
Suddenly my crap job seemed irrelevant0 -
I forgot the two hours I did at a law firm - I was supposed to work there for a week as a temp, turned up on time, thought the whole place was wierd immediately - odd poky little rooms, none of the staff talking, given a substandard tape machine to do audio typing from, and it was such bad quality I couldn't even hear the tape, typed two letters (badly), before anyone had even checked them I got called into an office and was told that my placement would be getting cut short - as in leave now! I was appalled as I've never been basically asked to leave a job ever! Turned out when I contacted the agency, the law firm HR in question had ordered a temp in error and I wasn't needed! I said immediately don't ever send me on a placement there again, they are wierd!
As for horrible bosses - gawd, I've had more of them than I have had hot dinners! I've had lots of jobs, and three nice bosses. And those three were in my last three jobs, and in the last year, so those aren't good odds! I've had lecherous perv, patronising husband and wife team, a boss we called Joe 90 (looked exactly like him) who was classic nerd and terrible people manager, total b*sta*d, and two-faced git! I also once got taken into a room by the assistant manager to Joe 90 who was lovely, and told me "I've basically been told to give you a b*ll*cking for not showing enough respect to the company and management. But I think you're great and certainly give respect where it is due, so let's pretend I've just given you the b*ll*cking." Very bizarre, he left sooner after that, and that company, previously a fairly well known high street chain is thankfully no longer in existence. They had some very shady practices, and one of the things I was unhappy with there was the fact that it was made quite obvious that someone got a promotion over me by sleeping with the other assistant manager! I did actually enjoy that job though, other than the drama!0 -
In the late 60’s, I was 15, and a friend and I worked in the local chemist 2 hours after school and 5 Saturday mornings. I was paid 7shillings and 6 pence per week, (37.5 pence!!!!) for 15 hours a week.
The owner, the chemist was a miserable old git who smoked CAPSTAN full strength continuously and hacked and spluttered whilst dispensing...leaving half smoked fags burning all over the dispensary....leaving burn marks everywhere! He called us “The Herbs” and shouted at us all the time, and demanding cups of tea be made every ten minutes.
Our job was to firstly stand at a huge stone sink and wash, (with COLD water and various sizes of bottle brushes) all the medicine bottles which people used to bring back daily. They used to be reused...I think this was normal in those days! The worst ones were old calamine lotion or milk of magnesia bottles...the stuff would have dried chalky and solidified for weeks.
Then, when that was done, we had to get a water spray bottle, a broom, and spray the wooden dusty floor of the shop then sweep the floor, leaving not a speck of dust anywhere.
Finally on a weekday, we had to go up into the attic, 3 floors up, and bring down crates of stuff to stock the shelves. In those days, there was a range of slimming foods, like choc bars and slimming biscuits etc...very nice they were too! So friend and I would sit up in the attic and scoff as many as we could to get the old git back. We hid the wrappers in our grammar school regulation knickers!!:o
On a Saturday, I had to do all of the above, plus stand outside and clean the shop front and plate glass window, leaving no smears, and then, wash and polish the huge cast iron weighing scales which stood on the pavement.
Once our boss was satisfied, he reluctantly handed over our pay for the week.
He died of lung cancer..........................:rolleyes:0 -
Oh, this thread is great! Some of you have had awful jobs, I hope you can look back and laugh now though!
My two worst jobs came in quick succession... first I was a pot washer at a restaurant. Like another poster has described, the machine was awful, dirty, steamy and often broke down. I was covered in bits of food and dirty suds after 5 minutes for the entire shift. I had to run around after everyone, making tea, getting glasses of water, passing plates. The dirty dishes piled up and the waitresses screamed for clean ones constantly. The worst bit, however, was the mess the work made of my hands and nails! :rotfl:
My next job was in a branch of ShoeFayre... mostly made awful by the horrible, witchy old boss. On my first day she 'taught' me how to vacuum the carpet, showing me twice how to push the vacuum around the floor! I vacuumed exactly how she'd showed me and she made me do that carpet FIVE times before she was happy. All day was spent polishing mirrors and dusting shoes. The worst bit was helping people with terrible foot hygiene with their shoes. Touching their smelly feet and holey socks was awful! One day the boss decided she wanted to offer a new service - foot massage. I refused and was banished to the stock room for 6 months! Aaaah, thank goodness for office work!0 -

Yep, those washing machines were hell. I don't think i ever want to see one again. Even your average domestic dish washer can bring back some painful memories Scarred for life!
I could not have worked in a shoe shop...i have a major phobia of feet...even my own. haha. The thought of having to touch someone elses smelly feet turns my stomach."You dont need a weather man to know which way the wind blows"0 -
My worst job was the one i just left 2 weeks ago! I worked in a fish and chip shop and because i am taller and stronger than most of the other staff i got given the hard jobs and every one else got to stand about and do nothing while i nearly broke my back lifting 1/2 stone bags of potatoes into a rumbler, and then into a chipper! It used to kill my back, 2 weeks later and its still sore from only lifting 4 of these bags. Also the fish used to be on a metal tray that needed washing and if u got hot water on it by accident it used to rank of rotton fishy smell! And i got paid LESS than every other person!! I did more work than the other staff put together and got £4.86 when they got £6.20! And the boss wonders why i left??
Theres 2 types of horse owner, a person who owns a horse and a horsey person
