  • Hi all,

I've decided to join and try not to buy clothes, make-up or toilettries- I will use up what I already have in. I think this will be difficult because I'm always seeing clothes I like even if its just in the supermarket!
Is there anything people have found useful to stop themselves buying accessories or clothes as I know that I can easily be tempted?!
    Lottie x

the supermarket was always a problem for me too, or anywhere were i was shopping for the kids clothes (like m&s) and i could wander over to the womens section. I completly agree with katie, just try and avoid those aisles or do you food shopping on line. With my challenge i will only go shopping if a) i want something in particular B) i have cleared paypal fund in my bank account (no 'borrowing' untill they have cleared lol) and c) it will go with the rest of my capsule.

Regarding toilitries, why don't you set yourself a challenge to use it all up?? I did this a few years ago, i would not buy say, another body moisturiser untill i had completly ran out of it. Honestly for 12 months i only bought soap, toothpaste, deodrant and mascara. I guessed i had save around £600 that year on my 'normal' shopping habits. I loved getting to the bottom of something then throwing it away. I am really a minimilist by nature and took great pleasure from this:confused: maybe i need to see somebody about it:rotfl:

When your tempted why not post on here and maybe we can encourage you???

    Bye for now Sharron xxxxx

Sharon you will have to post pics of the puppies when they arrive, hubby is hankering after another dog we used to have german shepherds but I am not sure.

I am loving my jeggings they are so comfortable, I think they will end up being my wardrobe staple for the winter with tunics, cardigans and woolly tunics.

Sold a pair of Ted Baker shoes on Ebay for £31.00 that I paid £4.99 from Ebay, a children's toy for £9.50 that I paid £2.75 for. I am hoping to use this money for some woolly tunics from Primark.

I have changed my supermarket shop to Morrisons/ Iceland or Lidl as they do not sell clothes and also taking hubby keeps me on the straight and narrow.

I am also using up all my toiletries and cosmetics, put a load on Ebay the other week and sold these, DD had a voucher for a free moisturiser the other day from Zest magazine that she did not want for a 200ml tube worth £8.00, so I nabbed this as it was a shame to waste it!

I have also used a lot of my stockpile for xmas pressies and have made a lot of beauty hampers for the female's, baskets were £1.00 from the pound shop and I bought the cellophane and bows from Ebay.

This thread has really helped me as I now realise that my buying was more habit than need, I have saved so much money that I can now afford to give my kitchen a face lift with my Ebay sales etc.

Hope you all have a good day

Hello to you all! Just thought I'd pop in and see how you're all getting on. Really well, by the looks of things!

Deb, I take my OH shopping with me and that completely ruins any purchasing! He gets really fed up and I feel guilty for dragging him along so I have a cursory look then go and he buys lunch! Result. I recommend you all try it! :)

I failed horribly on this challenge (although I didn't really commit as I knew I couldn't do it!) but have been trying really hard to make the most of my existing wardrobe and only buying things that mix with what I've already got.

One of my top buys was a roll neck jersey top from Primark - I bought it in black then went back and got a range of colours! They're perfect for wearing under dresses and t-shirts to make them suitable for the colder weather, and the colours are fab. Only £3 too! :)
  • Wow Sharron!!! Just came across this thread and love this idea although it feels very radical and more than a bit scary. You have totally inspired me though and am going to sign up to your challenge although:-

    1) Needs some new trousers for work but will finance these out of monetry xmas present. M&D always give me around £40. Or have £19 in Tesco clubcard vouchers so could use these - esp if they do another 'Double-up' promo.
    2) Was intending to treat myself to a Dress this year for Xmas party / parties. Am going to a rather swish do this year and have not bought one for several years and seriously have nothing in wardrobe that would be suitable. However am going to think about this and see what my options are (E-bay, Present from BF?, or have the opp to do some extra work)
    3) Will exclude undies and if my shoes are falling to bits I will replace them (but only buy bargins/offers/sale). I will need at least one pair of shoes before the 365 days are up. Am including accessories. Pah! who needs 'em anyway.

Have been staring at my budget for a while now trying to find ways to squeeze as much money into savings/mortgage and have already been trying to cut down my spending on areas such as Clothes and Toiletries. A couple of years ago I went bonkers with BOGFs and have a healthy stock of shower gel and shampoo which am now using up. So am going to be firm with myself and say 'no new stuff If I already have it in stock'

The last time I bought clothes was 21st July so this is going to be my start date - want to feel proud and motivated by this so don't see point of ignoring the fact that in effect I've already started (but will first take back the top I bought from DP on Saturday!) :A

Thanks for the inspiration and good luck to all who have joined
  • Thank you all for the hints and tips.
I am going to use up all the makeup, shampoos, shower gels etc that I have accumulated including all the samples and take curly girls advice ("no new stuff if I already have it in stock")
I should also take debidoodles advice and maybe change my shopping habits and either not shop in the supermarkets that sell clothes or avoid those aisles completely.
    Fingers crossed
  • Or create a look book... I like to buy mags like Vogue, Elle, etc for inspiration. When I've finished reading I cut out my favourite items and create 'look books' of bits and pieces I love. This way you get the experience of browsing through clothes and the joy of creating outfits by cutting bits out and pairing them with other bits!

I love this idea! I'm going to start on mine now and use old magazines and the Christmas catalogues for inspiration

  • Curly girl, welcome aboard:j I think 'your rules' should suit you and the main idea of the challenge is to spend LESS on clothes and make the most of what you have, so good for, you already started the challenge and you didn't even know it:T I use paypal money to purchase any 'new' clothes, this means i am recycling at the same time.

I too loved grammer girls suggestion of scrapbooking, this has been a great inspiration on many occassions, as well as having fun with dd glueing and cutting out!!!

totally off topic-My Jack russell had 4 puppies, the first one died sadly but she has 3 healthy boys all doing well, all named, by dd, Mario, Luigi, and Bowser. I have lots of pix to share with you, some of my scrapbook and some of my winter capsule, aswell as my little pups.

    Be back soon!!!!! xxx

    Wow!!
I can't even imagine trying this!! I don't buy expensive clothes but if I see something that looks great I have to have it and then also in the other colours so bad!
I have started to recycle more though, keeping receipts and if I have worn it after 3 weeks of buying I make myself take it back! And also taking back faulty items I couldn't believe how much I had in my wardrobe that I had just written off! Am ebaying clothes as well and trying to just spend this money on new clothes.
Love the idea of using everything up before buying again, I have got better at this already, needs must and all but can get a lot better!!!

You lot are such an inspiration!!!
