Every tea time all I get from OH is, "Can Rhys have cherry tomato?", "Can Rhys have chicken?", "But he can have chips, right?" I give up.. He's already snook a lick of an apple - OH was holding a half-eaten one and Rhys lunged for it, licking it whilst OH carried on chatting to me  (his head was in the way so I couldn't see what was going on).

Reminds me of another question for tomorrow... apparently prem babies are sometimes weaned "early" although I don't understand why! Nine questions so far.. hope the consultant is prepared! :o
  • Hello ladies! Hope everyone is well :).

Very strange waking up to a house without any children but we did a little DIY (its still a work in progress and we're still nowhere near finished! DH's family are the type to get a 'man in that can' but my family have always done things themselves so he has a lot to learn ;)). Babies loved being with Nanna, Grandad and my sisters and both slept through.

Just started watching season 1 of Ghost Whisperer and I think I might just love it! :D.

I will have a word with the peadeatric nurse tomorrow if possible - she's on long shifts this week so it might not be easy (72 hours in total this week!) and see what she thinks...
Thanks for the links feely - I tend to find kellymums very "it's this way and if you do anything else you're a terrible parent shame on you!!!" so tend to avoid them. All they do is get my back up and more determined to do what I want and not what they recommend. :) I did read the info though and have to say I am not sure I agree with it all but certainly was interesting :)
Mrs Moc - thanks for that... I know everything says 4+ months and that's all that has stopped me so far... I'm talking about maybe a baby spoon of baby rice or baby porridge - it is really more about texture for me than weaning her onto solids :) Hmmm might wait until I've spoken to the nurse next door and see if she has any examples from work that might be relevant...

Yes, it is a little strict! I love it, everything sits in perfectly with what feels right for me. The forums are ace - you aren't even allowed to mention CIO or CC. Topics on weaning before 6 months are locked. Some ladies have in their signatures that they've been breastfeeding for 40+ months!

I do get tempted to give Toby things, in some ways he seems ready and I'd love to give him 'nice' things. I enjoy my food and it seems hard/sad in a way to deny him food!

I know! I know! I know! (but still ask the consultant and let me know if I'm actually right or not!) Babies build up their iron stores more in the third trimester so if they missed that bit out they might not have enough to last until six months!

eczema and asthma are usually found in children with a family history of it and not because they were weaned early, my children have asthma and it is due to both my side and OH side having it. i think a lot is scare mongering and if you done everything by the book then we would all be bleerey eyed and misrable lol!
erin has just turned 6 months and there is no way that she could have lasted this long before getting solids, she is a big girl and IMO she needed fed earlier, i dont regret it and if she does develop asthma then it will be down to family history not due to her having solids a few weeks early?

See I just think that's SO wrong it's not even funny...

OK fine BFing for the first year (so 52 weeks) fine... individual choice :) - but censoring peoples threads who choose or have to stop BFing and start weaning earlier just gets my back up. Which is why I don't like it. Maybe it's because I always try to be laid back and allow people as much freedom as possible to see where threads run and what information and experiences people have instead of "THIS way is right and if you don't agree then you can't be one of us!" - it's just a tad dictatorial for my liking... :)

I heard somewhere (I think it was one of the HV but not sure) that the whole needing iron at 6mths in general is balls because breast/formula milk has iron in it

ooh Feely, MFD will be glad or maybe upset that she wasn't the first to come up with EBM ice lollies :D
I'm on the BLW side of the when to wean scale Chris wasn't fussed by mush and it made no difference to his sleeping whatsoever, I'm guessing that if we looked back evolutionary wise that is the most natural way and I've become quite the hippy of late so thats what fits me :o)
Weezl thanks for that BTA link I'm gonna pop it on the birth story thread :)

Before my computer crashed I was going to give MrsT the BLW guide to weaning - have you seen me parrot it out before MrsT?

Also - we used to sit Benjamin in his high chair whilst we ate dinner and give him a whole peeled raw carrot to play with and suck on - that way he was getting a taste and joining in but there was no way he could actually eat any of it. Recommended on the BLW course I went on.

In 2003 the Department of Health issued guidelines (based on recommendations by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF) that weaning should start at 6 months.

It is now thought that babies under 6 months have kidneys and guts that are not mature enough to cope with a more diverse diet and that early weaning can increase the risk of infections and the development of allergies like eczema and asthma.

Hmm - my HV told me this...kind of...but then said that the advice is from 17 weeks onwards

Damn - Fritha beat me to it whilst my computer was bl00dy crashing AGAIN

It is because their iron stores don't last for the full 6 months because they didn't get a chance to build them up in the last bit of your pregnancy ;):D
And iron is V important - isn't it Weezl ;):D

LOL - one of hubbys friends keeps asking if Benjamin can have quavers  has been doing since Benjamin was about 6 weeks :rotfl:
