just ride it down to the test centre m8 ... chances are you wont get caught. just wheel it in and say your friend dropped you round off the corner. why does the system makes it difficult for people to be green. the government should relax the rules on these things anyway. they are no faster than a racing cyclist and no more dangerous to other road users than a horse for example. yes if they relaxed the rules there would be a few smashes but they are ideal for short journeys and people who cant be bothered with cycling

As long as the bike is insured it's legal to ride to/from the DVLA centre since it's a mandatory inspection prior to registration. It's the same for MOT and SVA. You can usually insure an unregistered vehicle, they will take the VIN, however you will need to contact them with the registration number within a certain period (14 days now I think) otherwise they will cancel the policy.

edit: I will cite the exemptions:

Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994

    Not fixing registration mark
    s.42 (4)

For not displaying a tax disc (which is an offence, even if it would be Nil rated), it would be an exempt vehicle under s.29 because it falls under Schedule 2 s.22 (1).

I got a friend with a van to help me take it down the DVLA this coming Tuesday; I took out 3 of the batteries from under the seat which has made it much lighter. (the 4th one is in a different place and would take quite a bit more stripping down to get it out so I dint bother)

Hopefully I can then use it !

Brilliant I hope you finally get on the road.
While the batteries are out if you get chance can you see if they do say 48AH?

    Thanks.

@g_attrill; thanks for the tip on registration I wondered about that myself but didn't know and the bods in the DVLA will probably (incorrectly) tell us otherwise!

Unfortunately I dont see getting bigger batteries in, its a squeeze with the ones supplied. Unless you went for non lead acid which I think are physically smaller for the same capacity.

Regards riding the bike in for inspection, the inspection is to prove its brand new and not been used (cause they were imported Oct 08)
  • Sorry my mistake, wondered if the batteries are 38AH?

    Thanks,

    Dave.

    Yes they are.

Managed to get the bike down to DVLA this morning, inspection done, just got to wait for the paperwork and tax disc to come though the post. Should be a couple of days, and it will be a 59 reg

Finally got the reg (59) through from DVLA yesterday:j (was delayed in the post!)

Went to work and back today (about 15miles) on one charge, battery meter showing high. Its not as quick of the mark as an old petrol moped I had, so you need to allow for a bigger gap at roundabouts. But its still fast enough to keep up with town traffic.
It did give me a but of a scare when on a bit of an uphill in traffic I had the breaks on and had no power! I forgot this kills the power with breaks on, so just remember that.
Another thing you notice on two wheels is what a bad state out roads are in !

I see expansys have put the price up by £100 now ..

Anyway happy, so far, with it at the price it was !

Anyone else on this forum got one yet ??

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on your experience with this. From what you've said thus far, mainly concerning the running costs, insurance in particular, I don't think I'd get one in addition to a car. But it's still good to hear your views on your own experience.

Yes I was surprised at the amount it was actually. I was wondering about this and I remember that my car insurance lets me drive other cars and so I wondered if it would allow me to drive one of these scooters without having to have separate insurance?
  • Hi all, purchased mine bank holiday monday for 399, after 1 failed delivery and a bit of a run around from expynsis, it finally came yesterday.

Insurance was 152, 3rd party only, fully comp wasnt worth it considering excess levid on policy. I am 30 yrs old. So after a £45 deposit and £11 a month I am all insured.

Bike came in a big box on a pallet and attached to a metal frame. Charged it and its a nice piece of kit. Waiting for insurance docs then to the dvla to register.

In answer to last post you could drive it using another insurance but the law states the car/bike must be insured in its own right, so the answer is no
