I was in the same boat as you for a while. I rang a free debt helpline and they said to set up a another bank account without an overdraft and to stop paying all my credit cards but to write to say why. That would free me up money for food and essentials. Cancel direct debits so you don't get bank charges. Pay rent and Council tax first and then anything else that you can afford. It won't help this money but it will next. Could you get a part time evening job to get some more money?

I searched my flat for money and found an old handbag with £2 in it, it felt so great. The supermarkets closing time offers are great if you live in walking distance of one. Salmon for 20p once.

Tried to send you a private message but your mailbox is full. Please send a private message if you live in Cardiff - got some tins that I can give you, I don't like them but my flatmate moved out and left them.

They say you shouldn't refrigerate bread, however if you don't it only seems to last 2 or 3 days! I put it in the fridge and it lasts for a couple of weeks!

Not having a go at you, but they also tell you sell by dates...it's all about using a bit of common sense. Now I bake my own bread, which is natural, healthy and organic (apart from the chocolate, nut and banana loaf!)
  • try fasting during the day and eat whatever is suggested above for your supper. pray during meal breaks at work. god will answer your prayers. i have done it before.only if you have faith.

We all have different ways of coping.
Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x
  • Some of those suggestions are great but want to add a few:

1)Buy reduced price value loaf and freeze it - only defrost what you need for each day.
    2) Huge bag of smart price oats at ASDA is usually less than 50p and will easily last 2 weeks. At one stage I was having porridge for lunch and supper too - it really fills you up and boosts your energy.
    3) Jam sandwiches for lunch are a good suggestion but how about a smart price jar of peanut butter - that will boost your energy more if you're having to do loads of walking.
    4) UHT milk (own brand) is usually alot cheaper than fresh milk.
    5) If you've got a toastie maker then make yourself banana toasties with bashed up reduced price bananas - more energy and can do for any mealtime!
    6) If there's a Lidl near you ask them when they usually put out their free stuff - it's usually late at night or early morning but it's all free!!!!

    Hope that helps some.
  • I live 2 mins from a Lidl and never knew the offer free stuff...inside the store or outside?

I guess so, I just wasn't sure it was genuine to be honest.

  • I've just read all through this post and am so touched by the generosity of all the people on here. I, like many others on here, can identify with a lot of what BiW has said. I'm 40, single, a long way away from my family, only have a couple of friends nearby, in a low-paid job with few prospects (other than redundancy, the spectre of which seems to be looming larger by the day) and constantly short of money. It seems like as soon as I get paid the money goes on bills, for the last 2 months my food budget has been £10 a week or less and I feel like I am existing, not living. I know there are a lot of other things to life than money, but it sure as hell helps!
