I posted some things to her and I am sure she would have got them.

I think she may not be well as she was saying she had a rotten cough and she doesn't have the internet at home.

Ah, yes. She did say that she only had access to the Internet at work I think.

Walkers (the rambler types who wear anoraks, not the potato crisp makers) use lumberjack toilet paper.....

also known as leaves. I kid you not.
    :D

I have used newspaper/magazine/old letters etc occasionally. Argos catalogue was kinder on my skin though.:rotfl:This was when I lived in a crazy houseshare and sometimes we ran out of toilet paper much faster than expected.
  • nearly pay day hun, how're things going over the landlord issue?
I'm probably replying a bit late but I remember years ago when me and hubby were in a similar situation and we literally went out and bought beans and spuds to last the week! It's amazing how many different meals you can make out of them - chips and beans one night, jacket potato and beans, mash and beans - you get the picture, lol!
    Jenny :)

i haven't had mash and beans in ages - yum!
  • Seem to have been in a bit of a mood since yesterday evening. I know that comparing yourself to other people isn’t the best way of living (and normally I don’t do it).But I ended up thinking about people – mainly colleagues, people I went to school/college with and stuff. I feel like there’s all these people the same age as me or younger who have their lives so sorted out. They have great jobs, they own houses and cars (I still haven’t passed my driving test), some of them are married with kids – everything is so organised and “grown up” and I feel like I’m still a teenager – renting my room in a shared house, juggling debts, living off beans on toast with no money to spare for anything else. It just makes me feel like I’ve made a complete mess of my life. Right now I should be thinking about mortgages, and savings and insurance and all those other things I don’t understand. Instead I’m thinking about whether it’s a waste of money to eat a whole tin of soup in one meal. I feel like such a child sometimes. Like if only I had a brain things would be so much better…
But you know, this is something I can consider when I get over the immediate problem I suppose. Maybe I just need a different job, or to be more organised. Even if no more disasters strike, it’s still going to be years before I pay off my debts. I can’t imagine ever being in a position to own a house, or a car, or get married – or be able to have luxuries without feeling guilty. I feel like one way or another I’ll always be living hand to mouth, and I hate that.
So I’ve made a little progress I think, with the landlady. The nice people at the other board have made sure I understand a bit better what to do. I just sent her a text message to ask if I could have her address, so we’ll see what happens. I’m going to try drafting a letter this evening, in case I need to send it. This is a huge thing for me – the whole idea of is terrifying frankly. But I do feel as if I’ve been re-assured of the right thing to do, so I’m not being presumptuous, and just going to be shot down by someone who is more knowledgable than me.
Today’s lunch is leftovers from last night. Pasta with a tomato-ey sauce (it’s a good job I like tomatoes they seem to be a bit of a staple) followed by the strawberries from the weekend. I’ll be doing another run tonight and some weights (I’ve managed not to eat them yet!) . Then I think maybe I’ll treat myself to one of the food-parcel hot chocolates and read a book or something.
Got some Double Gloucester cheese last night for 80p from the “Eat Me Today” section in Spar – reckon it will actually last a few days, it looks fine.
I’m also developing a nasty cough – how much am I praying it’s not swine flu?!
Just over a week until payday anyway (I'll hardly be flush as I need to pay my Dad back, but at least I'll have something!)

I know how you feel; your first paragraph sums up the way I'm feeling too, so if you ever need to talk to someone, I'm here, so PM me.

I'm (nearly) 24, in a shared flat hundreds of miles from home in a rundown area with no job, no partner and often having to survive on porridge and value noodles myself. In fact, I've done what others have and when I have got spare money, I stock up my cupboard so I'll never starve again. I went down to 6 stone 5 a couple of months ago through stress and not being able to afford to eat.

This thread has, as it has with others, reinforced my belief in the kindness of strangers; there are some truly wonderful people in this world. Also, use by dates with things like cheese and bread mean nothing. I have cheese here which was best before July and still tastes fine. I put my bread in the fridge so it lasts longer and have been known to eat bread 3 weeks past its sell by date without ever freezing it or getting ill.

I have only recently found this site and now I have found it I intend to become a bit of an addict, who am I kidding, I'm already there. It so refreshing to know that 'MSE crew' don't judge, they just offer supportive, practical advice and a useful resource. You are all priceless and richer already because of your unselfish help.

Sending our lots of positive thoughts for BIW and everyone who has supported her.

  • Well broke in wales,
Hey dont get yourself down. You are no idiot. The fact that you asked for help and advice shows that you are not some egotist. Do you know how to make a simple white sauce with flour, milk and butter. Making cheese sauce to go with your pasta will be filling and go a long way. On your way to and from work, do you pass any gardens that have windfall apples. You could knock on the doors and ask to collect them (you could stew them and liven up your porridge or make apple flapjacks to take as energy bars for work. Do you like ironing? Offer your services to neighbours in return for clearing out their larder of goods near to use by. My uncle goes to the supermarket last thing for bargains. And a large american related supermarket sell curry sauce for 4p a jar! If you cannot make jam , just pick blackberries and add to porridge. I could go on all day. well done x

They say you shouldn't refrigerate bread, however if you don't it only seems to last 2 or 3 days! I put it in the fridge and it lasts for a couple of weeks!

The good thing is it's just for you (and not any babies) and to be honest I would suggest porridge and water. Yes it's not amazingly healthy but for how long you'll be doing it it's not the end of the world. Do you have a blender? If so grab a can of smart price tinned peaches and blend to make a tasty fruit sauce for your porridge. You can also use your storecupboard items to make pasta bakes. And remember for the future to stock up on non perishables when you have cash!
