I could use some help guys- and after reading this thread it's restoring my faith in humanity! I've been out of work for the last 3 months, with no access to benefits yet - still waiting for an appointment mid October!! I have 57p in my account and virtually no food in the house. I've tried calling my bank (TSB) to ask about a temporary overdraft, but they've said no. I can't get to job interviews because that costs money for buses and tubes, and there's no food in the house. I'm so lost, I have no clue what to do :(

Sorry I'm fairly under-informed in the area so hopefully someone who knows the systems better will be along soon

Do you have any family who could assist you? charity or somewhere else that could get you a food bank referral? why is it taking so long to get a benefits appointment? is there a different office you could get an appointment in sooner (some London boroughs have several, with the central one being heavily over-subscribed whilst ones further out more lightly loaded)

What line of work are you in/skills do you have and how likely is it you'll find a job sooner rather than later?
  • Hi, you may not be religious, but lots of church's run a food bank or could point you in the right direction. Also, your GP could refer you to a food bank hth x
I must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:
  • All of my family is in South Africa, and my dad has been out of work for 2 years- they're not able to help me either.

I come from a sales background - I've been offered interviews, but then it comes down to not having any money to get to the damn things :/

Benefits - I had my first appointment last week, and have to go back in a few weeks to do a habitual resident test or something? I get paid nothing until that's done too. The next closest office takes 40 minutes by bus - too far to walk, and no money for bus fare (the current office is already a 40 minute walk)

Called my GP- he had no clue what I was talking about :/

I've never been in such a bad spot.

If you go to your local benefits office then they will be able to issue you with a food bank voucher.

Have you had a look through your old stuff like DVD's and CD's to see if there is anything you can sell to get bus fare?

  • Visit your local CAB, they will be able to provide you with a food voucher and also look at any crisis help from your local authority. They will know where free food might be on offer and also will be able to advise you on the habitual residence issues. Make sure you take all your documents and letters with you - it helps enormously if people are organised about what help they need.
