  • Going home tonight to something as yet unidentified from the freezer and with my budget today, bought large box of eggs, bread to do until the weekend (can also make some cakes for sweet treats).

I would second the free cinema tix...great treat (which you can get quite regularly!) and I really grudge paying now.

Eggs are amazing - cheeseand tomato omelettes = yum (and I find if I have one for breakfast I only need a little lunch, porridge never fills me up wuite as much - maybe a protein thing??)

Anyone want to point me (and others) in the direction of this free cinema tickets business? I do love my films...

This month has been going well so far - apart from the fact I seem to be suddenly suffering from pizza face for the first time since leaving school. What's going on here? I go through ages of stress and restricted eating and basics-only toiletries, and I'm fine - then suddenly five months on my skin decides it hates me... grr - just asked about it on the health and beauty board. These ar the things you can do without....

REALLY getting into the No-Spend Days idea. I'm finding it very helpful for discouraging those little unecessary spends. Much less likely to get the bus home, or buy an extra yoghurt to go with unch, or put extra credit on my phone if I know I'm going to "ruin" a NSD. I'd definetly recommend the thread to anyone who isn't already aware of it (I tend to lurk on that one more than I post, but it is super-inspirational - still not sure how some people manage to do 20 plus NSD's, but it's good to have something to aspire to!). Helps encourage budgeting too.

Also found that doing my shopping weekly, for me at least, seems to be easier to budget for than buying monthly (I live near a supermarket, luckily). That way I can look what veg and perishables I ahve about to go off in the fridge and fit the rest of my shopping around those. I'll never be a rigid meal-planner (I'm not sure it works so well if you're a single person anyway) , but I do find I'm thinking more these days about how I can make the most of everything I have, and limit waste. (I eat a lot of "cupboard surprise" type dishes!)

I saw some truly appalling pictures online a while ago about the amount of food waste we produce in this country, and that was enough to make anyone think a little harder about the way they use food. I'll try find the link at some point.

    hi,
have you got a waitrose near you? ive had somre really good bargains there towards the end of the day.
    sandwiches 10p
meals (you can put in freezer) from say 3.99 to 65p
    bread 10 p

even had a fresh whole trout for 50p over christmas
if its the same days date they will sell it off, but they dont ALL do it so cheap but ive been around the country and many do

the meals are the best as although the date is up you can freeze on day of purchase up to a month :)
burger king, buy one get one free, get one for later!!!

    good luck

just to add re the previous post, i went into The Upper Crust recently and they thre out a perfectly good pile of baguettes because they had been on the shelf over the alloted time ( they were only made a few hours earlier)
i asked if i could have one free or even give them 50p but they wouldnt

    WHAT A WASTE!!!
  • buger king = major ewwww.

But thanks for the other tips.

The whole food waste thing is a real bugbear of mine at the moment. My sister worked at one of the posher supermarkets a few years back and when they were throwing out some of the perfectly-good-but-past-it's-sell-by-date food, would often offer to take it home to feed her family, even if she had to pay for it - but it was always a straight no. Really annoys me that I go to so much effort to use every scrap of my leftovers (as I'm sure you all do too) and then shops and restaurants are throwing out hundreds of pounds worth of perfectly edible food every day.

Hi biw, first time I've popped back on to your thread is ages glad to hear how much more positive you sound and how things are looking up.

I know what you mean about food waste - but I think it varies for different supermarkets, even from branch to branch. A Morrisons near my Mom has fantastic deals in the last hour of the day, I think they must have a manager who thinks like us about food waste. So they try to clear absolutely everthing on the last day in date. They sell all sorts of stuff for 9p, huge bags of rolls, cheese, meat, etc.
Better still they sometimes do £1 bags, where you can fill up one of their carrier bags with all the stuff going out of date (which is put on a couple of stands), my mom has had a bag crammed full of stiltons, blue cheeses, bread, cakes, fruit etc all of which got eaten, and a lot was suitable for freezing. Of course its always the luck of turning up to the shop at the right time but the shop staff seem desperate to help you take as much as you can, better than going to landfill. We should have more of that type of attitude in shops.
