Thanks very much nedmundo, that does help a lot. You write as though you have plenty of knowledge in this field. From what you say, it seems as though varifocals shouldn't really be sold online?

I may have learned a costly lesson.

Well let's put it this way, there's a lot more scope for things to go wrong than right

  • I've bought 2 pairs of varifocal spectacles online before and they both worked better than the glasses sold to me by Boots. You need to go for a good lens like mine, which is made by Zeiss. I bought the Zeiss Superb lenses and they are so much better than my old Varilux lenses.

Just Google 'Zeiss Superb Lenses' and read all the great reviews. They are around £400 in Vision Express but I only paid £250 from an online company. My husband bought his last pair online and never experienced any problems, where as he never really got on with the pair he bought from Specsavers. He also went for the zeiss lenses and saved a fortune buying them online.

I think you are both very fortunate. Out of curiosity, how do you know the lenses are positioned optimally?

  • Hello. I need to order my Mum some glasses with an online prescription glasses company (not decided which yet), but I don't know how to properly interpret her prescription.

I've Googled "Your Glasses Prescription Explained" but find their explanations very difficult to understand.

Could really use some help, if someone would be kind enough to explain.

If she wants everyday glasses... do I just enter the Distance values for each eye? [PIC below]

If she wants reading glasses... do I just enter the NEAR values? [PIC below.]

It may be obvious to most people, but I'm not certain, and I don't want to enter incorrect data with one of the online precription glasses websites. Thanks.

    Hi Wolfplayer,

"If she wants everyday glasses... do I just enter the Distance values for each eye?"

"If she wants reading glasses... do I just enter the NEAR values?"

Correct. Your mum has a SPH +2.25 reading in her prescription. Many online shops will allow you to attach, fax or mail your prescription with your order, so you can be sure the data is correctly entered. :)

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks SelectSpecs company representative, for your response.

It's highly likely the order will be placed with your company anyway. Partly why I chose this thread to ask my question. Friend recommended you.

However I'm not sure why, out of all those values/readings, you chose to highlight the reading of Left = Distance = Sph +2.25 in the prescription... as though it's something special from all the other values(?).

I'm looking at the SelectSpecs website now, after registering an account.

I need to sit down with my Mum this evening and decide what designs she likes the look of. She wants to buy at least 3 sets of prescription glasses, and maybe sunglasses as well.

    Thanks.

    Hi Wolfplayer,

Unsure I follow your question? Both right and left eyes have an additional +2.25 in the sphere values for reading?

I your mum needs glasses for reading then enter choose reading and enter the "near" values. For distance, then choose distance and enter the distance values.

You can attach your prescription with your order or fax it through to put your mind at ease. :)

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards.

Ah, yes, I get it now.

Now I can order with confidence. Thanks for confirming things for me SelectSpecs company representative / James.

We will place her order later this evening. I'll update this thread after she's received her order, and after she's had some time to test them out. I'm hoping she'll be as pleased with them as my friend was with his order from SelectSpecs a few months ago.

Well, I've had to send the following to SelectSpecs about my order.

I ordered on 30th Dec, was told on 3rd of Jan that the frames were on back order and would arrive on or around 20th January. It's now the 26th and I've heard nothing. As I mention in my letter, they appear to have made the lenses even though they don't appear to know if the frames are even available. Annoyingly, nothing was mentioned on their site about the frames not being in stock or I wouldn't have ordered them - typically they told me after I'd paid. Anyway, here's the email I sent. Frankly, I just want my money back now and will go use a High Street optician instead.

I was advised that you would receive my frames from the manufacturer on or around 20th January. It's now the 26th January and I can see from my order progress that they are still on order.

I can't believe I've not even been contacted about the delay as tomorrow it will be a week since my frames we supposed to have arrived and that's just awful customer service.

I also note that you've made the lenses, even though you don't have any frames to put them in or appear to know when they will arrive. I assume this allows you to say that the money isn't refundable.

However, I've already told you don't want any other frames other than the ones I specified and if you can't supply those then I'd like my money back so I can try on and order a pair somewhere else.

From my perspective you've taken my money and not supplied the goods, so unless I hear from you in the next fortnight (as per small claims track recommendations), I'd like my order refunded.

If that doesn't occur, I'll pursue the matter through the small claims track at country county and if that doesn't work, I'll report you to the ombudsman, because effectively you will have taken my money and supplied nothing in return.

I appreciate you may not want this kind of hassle - and neither do I - but I need new glasses for general use and particularly for driving lessons, as I'm taking an intensive course to pass my test before the end of May so that I can drive my pregnant wife around and to the hospital etc.
