A super king is the same width as two singles, but the super king is longer by 3ins. So if the length is a problem in the room, the singles might fit better.

.....can a few inches really make a difference?

Oh what a dodgy mind I've got this afternoon ;):o

Hubby & I have got a king size bed with 2 double duvets. We had to share a duvet the other night & I ended up fighting with him for it the whole night- the one thing we're not compatible on

Noooooooo, we had to sleep in two single beds on holiday unable to push them together the way the room was situated. I kept waking up every hour or so.

It reminded me of being in hospital to be honest.

my mom and stepdad have 2 singles pushed together (and they also have 2 double quilts - keeps out the cold!!) they have the singles because they both like different types of matresses and my mom told me my stepdad is a fidget so he can toss and turn all night and my mom doesnt get disturbed and there is no duvet snatching going on!!!

we found a king size really was masses better than a standard double - it was 15 years before we had a house with a bedroom big enough for one - I too was puzzled why those few inches made a difference but they did.

I would hate separate beds though - bed is the only time we ever got any time together when our kids were small and not always then!

I know this doesn't quite fit in with what you were after, but for anyone else in your situation there is allways the option of zip & link beds. The mattresses have a zip and the bases have brackets so that they can be joined together if required, and you won't fall down the gap in the middle.

My grandparents used to do it :)

My parents on the other hand just have single duvets in a double bed :) Because my mum steals the whole duvet if they don't ;)
I on the other hand prefer sharing my duvet and don't mind the odd tug of war with hubby - but then we have a king size and a kingsize duvet too :D

we have a king size bed and a super king duvet, if you like different tog ratings, google partner duvets, they have different tog ratings on each half.

no draughty backs with this set up!
  • Margaret - quick question re the 'under' quilt to cover the join - our bottom fitted sheet would struggle to stay on with that extra bit of padding I think: do you have a problem?

I bought a superking size matress protector from Ikea which is plenty large enough and even has room to spare! Can't find it anymore as I wanted another one, so perhaps they don't make them now. I got my fitted sheets from there too and they're fine over all the thicknesses.

This is what I have and bought them from Argos. They were a bargain too. Looked round at plenty of shops to find a decent bed and was recommened these by my sister. Well worth it - the difference was great for my back and no problem with the cuddles either!
