No, I don't think using single beds is 'something the older generations do'. I know a couple in their 90s who still sleep in their double bed.
We're both 74 and we have a king-size. That gives us ample room to move around if one of us is a bit restless. We wouldn't consider single beds. I love the feeling of being able to stretch out my hand and he's there. Thanks all. I think singles might not be an option then if they work out the same size as a super king size. Its not so much that the width wont fit, but where the bottom left corner of the bed would be would restrict us walking into the maian part of the bedroom as it will be extremely close to a wall. The rest of the bed would fit perfectly! Lol. I also thought this morning that on nights where one of our daughters is feeling unwell and want to come into bed with us a super king is much more practical than two singles.
So I think we might be a bit stuck then. We need a bigger house before we can get a bigger and that won't be happening any time soon.
We did get to try a super king once when staying at a hotel and we loved it. Why not go for a king size or queen size bed then, bigger than a standard double but not as big as a super king, should give you and extra bit of space!
I'd highly recommend a king size duvet too, I know you said your DH found it too heavy but you can get lighter ones by going for a different filling. It means you are much less likely to get a draft. You can always tuck it in or make your bed so that it isn't central on the bed so that you don't trip on it. To be honest if we make the bed our king size duvet isn't big enough to touch the floor. But you could go for a queen size as a half way house, or two single duvets for a different solution.
Personally all those pillows sound a bit bonkers, why do you need so many? Don't they get kicked out of the way when you sleep? Could you swap some of them for square cushions or cylinder cushions to reduce the space they take up. Personally I just have two, both under my head, DH has the same.
I would never want to sleep in a separate bed from DH and miss him if we do ever sleep apart. That bed time cuddle is the real couple time that brings us close together at the end of the day, but we also know a couple who when they first moved in together after a year together and newly engaged decided to go for separate beds and separate rooms! So each to their own.0 -
I second a king size rather than superking, I slept with pillows in all the places you mention when I was pregnant and even with a very broad husband in the bed, still had plenty of room for both of us to move. You could always get a superking duvet for it, then you have more cover to tuck in down your back (another thing I also do) and enough to cover you both well.0

The reason I have so many pillows is because I have had back surgery and the recommendation (even for people who haven't had back problems) is to have a pillow between your knees to help align your spine. I also find that on in my arms helps me as it stops the top half of my back from being scrunched up (that probably doesn't make sense but I don't know how else to say it).
We have talked about a king sized bed but my feeling was that can a few inches really make a difference?

We have a 6 foot bed - the superkingsize bed you mentioned - and it's wonderful!:D
I'm not kidding when I say at least once a week one of us will say 'I love our bed' because it's so big and we can both move around in our sleep without disturbing the other

I have just found a 7ft x 7ft bed on ebay. Is that a superking? It calss it emperor but I've not heard of that before. That would probably fill my bedroom though. And as a practical thing, would that actually fit in a van and how easy would it be to get it into your bedroom?

Mine is a 6ft 6in x 7ft water bed and its brilliant. Problem is, literally every hotel bed is now uncomfortable for us!0

my partner and i have a king size, and it feels so much bigger than a double. my partner is quite tall and moves around a lot in his sleep, but we still have plenty of space. if it will fit, i would definitely go for a bigger bed rather than 2 singles as i like the added warmth!! go into a shop and both try lying down on a double, then a king, and you'll see the difference it makes.2011 wins: £481Eleventh Heaven: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 110
