I just got the email this afternoon - no way am i doing that unless they offer some sweetener to take it - which they won't do.
I'm sure it has already been confirmed on these boards by the SP Representative that you only get charged £50 by SP if your change date falls before the 31st August, and not application date.
Personally, I'm going with EDF and will be doing the application this week - so hopefully it will switch by mid-September or so.0 -

Can the SP representative confirm this? I want to know when I can start the switch. EDF have advised waiting until 1 week before, but then say the switch takes 4-5 weeks to complete, so surely it should be safe to start now?0 -

it may take about 6 weeks to switch suppliers but the problem is when do they actually apply to your supplieronce you've given them the go ahead, they could apply to switch the very next day, this is the problem.0

So the sceptic in me thinks that Scottish Power may rush through applications to switch to charge us all the £50 exit fee....?0 -

i just happened to have phoned SP earlier ref this point about being charged for switching prior to 31st the lady from SP informed me that if i apply to another supplier prior to the 31st i would be charged a £50 fee. this is totaly different to my new supplier starting my new srvice before the 31st. anyway nobody in there right minds would do that.0 -
The Scottish Power rep's post was pointing out to somebody who'd also phoned in, that their call cantre staff were giving out incorrect information. Looks like the call centre staff still haven't been rebriefed.
One option is to switch through the energyhelpline comparison site. They will ensure the switch does not go through before 1st Sep.604!0 -

Another fustrated SP customer here...
I just phoned Energyhelpline and asked them if Scottishpower could charge customers the £50 exit fee for just initiating a switch before the 31st and she replied that this would be completely illegal to do! She added I would only get charged if the change of supply happens before 31st and that this is now unlikely as it usually takes about 6 weeks.
Well based on the above I have just taken the plunge and just switched to EDF online 5 tariff (via topcashback). I will telephone SP to tell them this as well.0
