25,000 posties going on strike this weekend???

Just a point of interest, many years ago when i did my work experience in my last year of school i did it with royal mail at my local royal mail depot.
i worked in the mass mail or door to door department as well as sorting mail in the main sorting rooms, delivering mail with posties on their walk and going out with drivers to exchange mail at various depot around the country, taking mail with us bringing mail back etc so i have a slightly better knowledge of the inner workings of royal mail than perhaps the average royal mail customer.
i recall that the junk mail required a separate outbuilding (a big out building) staffed full time by six full time sorters and the bosses were constantly asking posties to do overtime in the junk mail depot. Junk mail does require sorting as senders stipulate which postcodes/areas they want their mail to be delivered to yet it bears no post code so this has to be done as the mail comes in before being sent up to the right posties who deliver to that post code.
in comparison the special deliveries were handled by one solitary postie inside a locked room before being given to a single van driver to deliver.
So what does cost more in handling?
Edit: just recalled a very boring meeting i had the privilege of sitting in on during my work experience when i was shadowing the boss, lots of high paid royal mail suits discussing the problems they were having with keeping staff on board and motivated as well as new revenue streams they could exploit, it's sad to see that after 12 years they are still not getting either of these right. Thank god i declined their offer of a job when i turned 18.
lol and in that time nothing has changed
its funny how so many people have experience of RM and assume nothings changed
nowadays most D2D's come ready boxed from priniting in walksorted boxes all labelled to go to the specific walk with a computer printout showing what walks are in that 'lot'
my office covers 4 postcodes and is a big office
theres no D2D staff bar one person(usually a manager) who puts the boxes out on a saturday
so for comparison, the office gets around 800-1000 SD items a requiring a staff of 2-4(depending on the day) to deal with those.SD items have the handling to delivery, then undlivered, returned items etc etc
we have approx 100 walks getting 3 D2D items a week
say an average of 700 calls per duty.
so 2100 D2D items,210000 d2D items delivered weekly with no overtime required as its covered on the normal delivery
barring any excess D2D items which is noninal then its a one way stream with the D2D's
the main UK D2D office is in perth and this is where all D2D traffic goes through0

ok, they have invested in some technology but still i don’t see how comparatively they make more on leaflets than specials as i pointed out 25,000 specials generates £159,000 more revenue than 25,000 leaflets, surely that more than pays for the vans and extra handling and comes out with more than £1,475 profit at the end? If so then i'm right, ebayers sending out specials and recorded delivery items is more profitable than mass mailing.
There are 70,000 ebayers who make a living on ebay some of those sellers alone send out 200,000 to 300,000 items with royal every year then there is the rest of the 70,000 add in what all the rest are sending, then add in the proportion of ebay's 15 million registered uk users that don't make the 70,000 "professional" seller list but still send a good few items each a year and how much revenue do you think royal mail are making off ebayers a year? it's got to be many, many millions.
And what ever way you look at it that’s alot of leaflets at 30p each to make junk mail more profitable.0

as i say take your rubbish elsewhere... see what sort of service you get then.. i'm not begging you for a job..i don't owe you anything.Hezzawithkids wrote: »If that's a typical postie attitude to their job then I'm not surprised the RM are in such deep doo-doos. Its our ebay "rubbish" that's kept them in a job for the last few years. Cheers, pal. :rolleyes:0

Your complacency is breath-taking, my friend. I work in a service industry and if myself and my colleagues felt that way about the people who pay our wages - our customers - then the company would fold overnight and we'll be joining you posties on the dole queue. What is it about your job that has made you this way?£2 Savers Club 2016 #21 £14/£250

never did i say i was a bad postie.. I've got over 400 customers who will vouch for that.. What i am saying is i don't have to tug my forelock to anyone of you moaners...i DO NOT OWE anyone a living.. i'll say it once more...if you are not happy with the service...CLEAR OFF!!!0

I really sympathise with the hard working Posties like Custardy who are being forced to do more and more work and I know a couple who are under extreme pressure.

However, I don’t believe RM staff have the general public behind them anymore as the service is so poor. I know some RM staff who are lazy bugxxxx and will do anthing to avoid going the extra mile or taking on board anything that might help RM modernise and improve. Their union is stuck in the 70s and I think they are RM staff's worst enemy as in the end RM will lose out to competition and the job losses will be huge.

The whole RM service needs to be dragged kicking and screaming into this century. Sorry Custardy, this isn’t aimed at you but at the large swath of your colleagues who let you and your employers down.0

you see a lot of posties were/are used to the old job & finish set up
me, i was a chef for many years and dont see an 8 hour day as a hardship.
however when the job isnt achievable in those 8 hours and you are expected to work over/magically make it work/cut & bring it back depending on the flavout of the week then i do have a problem with it.
my partner recently got made redundant which took a lot of stress off me with childcare but while it was ongoing the company that often touts flexibility offered me none.
to give you an idea of my office set up.it takes 20 minutes to get to my duty, obviously it takes 20 to get back
RM have allocated 5 minutes for the outward and return duties combined.theres a 35 minute shortfall for a start not counting the walking duty being increased to near 900 and the previous van duty being dissolved and added to that duty
summer is the quiet time and at best i can finish on my time though most days im over my time. approaching the managers about what we are going to do when it gets busy gets a standard 'fob' off
so while RM put the spin of posties not working their hours yada yada, those that have made changes get stiched up.
is it any wonder theres resistence when every change results in the errosion of the service, drops in moral and working conditions0
