This did make me laugh, I would also hope my own children are not that stupid, then again stupid kids tend to come from stupid parents...

My cousin is a security guard for Tesco (for his sins), I called in a few months back to see him stood outside (all 6ft and 18 stone of him) with a young girl barely 15, arms folded and squared up to him :rotfl:
He told me they come in, in groups of about 8, split up so that he can't watch them all on the monitors while one goes to buy the alcohol. What they were to thick to work out though was that 1. He watched them all come in together and 2. Nipping up and down the booze isle to whisper to the 'alcohol buyer' what they wanted before disappearing into another isle was really obvious.

After spending the best part of a week throwing them all out he banned them :rotfl:

I'd want a lot more money than he is getting to do his job believe me!

A 35-year-old might, if they're lucky, look as young as 25, but they are never going to look underage, are they?

Thats exactly what irritates me so much! I suppose its good that I look young enough to be ID'd, but I am clearly over 18!

Please dont shout at me but.............................

I work in an off-licence and we have to ID everyone who looks 25 or under. To me its silly as it is 18 to legally buy alcohol but its what we are paid to do. We do obviously serve them if they are 18 and over with ID.

We have spot checks done by the police and company all the time to see if we are doing our job.

We get an £80 on the spot fine which comes out of our own pockets not the company, get sacked, manager may get sacked and the company fined and taken to court if we sell to someone under 18.

Its not worth not asking if your job could be on the line and £80 to me is 2 weeks wages as im only part time.

I have had sooooooo much abuse but I do explain its in the company policy and we have to do it, but have had 4 cans of tennants threw at my face, someone else smashed the bottle on the floor and also told I would be attacked when I finished my shift outside.

It really isn't nice, I know as I get ID'd everywhere too and expect it as im only 21 but it isn't nice for the people who have to ID either.

The whole buying for your kids is getting out of hand though. I do still serve people who have their kids with them as any parent wouldn't leave their kids at home while they did their shop and I understand that, but if they ask their kids what they want in front of me (and trust me it happens at least once every week) I will refuse as again its company policy.

So please next time if you are ID'd please remeber the person is only doing their job so dont get horrible with them.

    xx

Sorry - Should have re-read before I posted. Meant to say we get fined if we sell anyone under 18 not, not failing to ID them. Sorry my fault.

Would all this happen because of failure to obtain ID, or if the person was under 18? I'm pretty sure the offence is to sell to someone under 18, and if you sold to someone who was 35 (for example) but failed to obtain ID, no offence would have been committed. Although, I do understand that you may have breached company policy (but that's a matter between you and your employers).

I certainly don't condone anyone taking out their frustrations on the checkout person, but it's a shame that your employers don't allow you to use an ounce of common sense.

Yes that would happen if they were under 18, but they send in people who look under 25 to see if we would id them as its what were trained to do, im not sure of what the outcome with that would be as ive never been caught doing so before.

As I said its what we are paid to do, we cant change rules (although alot of it would make sense to stop the whole 25 thing and bring back the normal 18) but we cant. It is a real pain as maybe some people get a kick out of Id'ing but I don't and it's horrible having to ID people especially when I look young and get asked "are you even old enough to work in here"

Laurissa - can you be fined for not asking for ID for anyone that looks under 25? I thought you could only be fined for actually supplying alcohol to someone who is under 18?.
    .

No of course you can't be fined!

I think we ALL agree that we would like supermarkets to request ID for those who look 'young' AND its NOT the fault of the cashier.Who is required ( by their company policy ) to ask.

BUT  the OP was making the point that the ( TESCO ) supermarket was making the assumption that it was not for him/her but on the behalf of a minor. That was/ is wrong.
