I have a similar problem - I have essential medical equipment which MUST be kept with me at all times, so I have no alternative but to take it on as hand luggage. But that means I don't have much room left for clothes and other stuff. I can just about manage on a weekend break, travelling very lightly and rinsing stuff out overnight, but any longer and I have to check my normal case through the hold so I can keep my medical case with me. I have sometimes wondered if they'd make an exception to the one bag rule, for medical equipment, but tbh I'd rather check my normal case in, than have to explain myself to some jobsworth.

  • Good way to compress your clothes into a small space is with those roll-up vacuum bags (the ones you just roll, not the ones you need a hoover to extract the air from) - they save a lot of space, and you can cram in twice as much stuff, but check the weight, as all the extra stuff makes your bag a lot heavier.

This website sells great bags for flying. I fly with ryanair a lot so get the cheap flights by taking only hand luggage, and the medium size bags on this website are exactly the size ryanair specify. So i know it defo fits in them size checking cages, and i get the absolute maximum amount of hand baggage.

Unless you are going somewhere colder and wetter than the UK (unlikely) you don't
NEED more that 10Kg. I do 5 Months in Asia with 8kg max. OK I take a few heavy bits onboard in my pockets but nothing that upsets security.

With Ryanair, I know they have like a metal stand with a holder at the bottom that dictates if you can take your luggage on as hand luggage. Now...it's basically a metal basket but can your luggage rise higer than the top of the basket? As I've used a case before and it fit in but not heightwise, and they let it through.

You may not seen their new high-tech cardboard boxes, exact size for their
hand baggage sizes, it's all changing.

I can't wait to see them! Will a laptop case fit inside? Just so I know!
  • I spent AGES with tape measure looking for the right hand lugguage.
    Came up with two options.
the smaller case from Pound stretchers of all places for £9.00 Not very strong and wont hold out much hope for long term use but great for husband. Dont forget it does not need to be sturdy as it is not in the hold
the other option (mine) is pricier but worth it. Found this light framed suitcase from Clarks village in Somerset. only weighs 2kgs brand SUB 0 G. cost £45 but worth it. Fitted into the Ryan Air measure thingy like ahand in glove with room to spare if I chose to bulk it out to the max. very satisfying. Happy flying

Size of box is the max size of their hand baggage regs.
