The Avantix Ticket Machines are off line and seek auth at the end of our shifts.

I do suspect though that the train operating company may impose a ban on the RBS Visa Debit Card on the Key Account as it is meant to have auth taken as soon as the card is used.

We have had problems with passengers using those pre paid cards and then when auth is obtained at the end of the shift it is then found that the passenger had no money in their pre paid account.

    HTH

I thought so as I know N-I-D is convinced they should not work, but here in the West of Scotland any card will run through an on-board off-line ticket machine. I dont even think they have those new ones they are still the old one you swipe the card down the side of here. No Chip and PIN on it, unless they have changed over in the last month.

Edit: I am sure it is because the old BR used to have a very high floor limit of something like £99 before they had to call for authorisation, so they were covered for the use of any card. I have used a US issued prepaid debit card with nothing on it and it worked just fine. Dont tell First Scotrail.

Its First ScotRail I work for.

We still swipe pasengers cards through the machine, for some reason we haven't got chip and pin yet.

Your right regarding the floor limits for cards:

    Its £75 for Switch Cards....

Its £150 for Visa and Mastercard credit cards....

I was speaking to our fraud and security team regarding these pre-paid cards and there also of the opinion that we dont accept these cards on-train, they should only be used where the system can check the balance on-line.

Here is my chance to prove N-I-D wrong about all auth cards then.

If you can cancel a transcation, swipe a Visa Electron card through the machine for a return ticket of high value and you will see it works just fine, it is not until the bank bounces it back they know there is a problem.

The only reason Scotrail dont accept Electron is that this was happening many years ago and so they told everyone not to accept the card, even although they work perfectly fine in the machine.

I dont know if this is the same for SOLO, I have never tried but those machines are only programmed to read the first digit of the card, recognise it as Visa, Mastercard, Switch etc, then read the check digit (sometimes called an Luhn digit) and the card works. As Electron cards have the standard Visa numbering system the machine simply accept them.

    Yes, thats right.

A Visa Electron card will still swipe through the machine but all staff have been instructed not to accept them.

We have been issued with the new upgraded Avantix 2 machines so i'm not sure if the machines will now recognise the card as Electron and flag up a message not to accept the card.

I did have a passenger on my train the other day there who wanted to pay with a A&L Visa Debit Card and when i swiped it through the machine a message came on screen thats warned me "Card on hot list"

I think those Avantix Pos terminals on trains are Supplied by Casio. They are connected to a Dionne Chip & Pin reader does not seek authorisation. It merely checks that the pin is correct. It will decline cards against a list it holds in its memory which is updated each time the advantix is returned to the base station..

Althought The newer machines have a GSM SIM card slot in the hand device and has the ability to dial out and authorise transactions. I have no idea if these are in use.

If there is an AUTH CODE on the reciept your given then its called the bank for confirmation it is this code that guarentees the merchant payment. And since chip and pin came in, i've never been given a recpeipt without one on it.

My barclaycard used to not dial home when i used it in the local supermarket, and as soon as chip and pin came in it authorised every single transaction.

    Hi,

I noticed this on the receipt we get from the ticket machine that it has an AUTH CODE on it but there is no way the machine has called the bank for Autorisation.???

Thankfully these days I have a concessionary pass so I dont pay much and buy the ticket before I board. I really a very honest person.

Edit: this brings back memories of being on a GNER service from Glasgow Central and when I took out my credit card the guard took out an old slip that you put in an imprinter and rubbed his pen over the top, to bring through the numbering, then got me to sign it. He then issued me with a small white piece of paper as my return ticket.

You probably just need to bring ID and that'll be it, that's what happened when I opened my Co-Op account - they accepted me and then I just had to bring ID.

But how has this got anything to do with RBS Visa Debits?
